Breakdown assistance

have an accident and this will be how you get home

Beware - a lot of the breakdown companies specifically exclude accident recovery from their policies now.

I always take out basic roadside cover as its handy if you ever need a tyre changing away from home and you don't want to mess up your suit, or you're on the motorway where I would never change a tyre, or you're with someone dozy who runs out of petrol in the middle of knowhere. I don't really see the point in paying for onward travel becuase you can negotiate that in the event its required and they'll just charge you for anything over 10 miles. I think I've called them out twice in 6 years - once to change a tyre and another time when a workmates car wasn't running right in the works car park!

I noticed my Grandad had an RAC card and it said "Member for 44 years". He pays the full £100+ package and always has done. I asked him how many times he'd used them - 3 times, but not since about 1985. He's always run newish cars and kept them meticulously maintained though.

I've just got an el-cheapo Europe Assist policy, think it cost me £35 or something but does exactly the same as the AA/RAC/Greenflag.

I hope I never need to use it but for the money it's worth having that safety net just in case.

Green Flag is superior in my experience to either RAC/AA.

Green Flag contract the work out, and will call whoever is nearest to you, and be with you very quickly. My alternator failed at night in the country, pulled into a pub on the roadside, called them, ordered pint and only managed to drink 1/4 of it before he arrived - and I don't drink slowly. The contractors are usually self-employed so know their stuff.

AA/RAC have been slower to respond, not nearly as knowledgable due to their knowledge coming from training cources etc. and not as friendly either.

Fro some reason my insurer offers dirt cheap breakdown recovery service, well for what you get for your 40 quid it includes everything that the 140 quid rac/aa ones do.

I've used it a few times and it's always been great, the first year it was through the RAC anyway, then I think it moved to some company who basically call out local garage people to sort you out. Never had a problem, even when we needed to get somethign for a full lift of my old 19 when it was smashed on a motorway slip road.

Worth it imho as long as it's cheap :)

Definately worth it i've had an experience where i had broken down on the motorway had no cover called out an independant garage. He took 2 hours to arrive i had to pay £155 cash for a raditor bandage that didnt even fix it properly and broke down again before i got home. So for the £39 p/a standard AA cover i'd say its worth it.

The AA took five hours to get a flatbed to me when I was broken down at the side of an unlit, NSL, dual carriageway (without hazards as my battery had gone flat after the first hour)... At night. Oh, there was no hard shoulder either.

Serves you right for buying one of those silly plastic "Lots Of Trouble Usually Serious" cars

Get yourself a nice Passat or something and you'll be set.
