How many of you have a tools or a break down kit in your car? Im looking at getting a simple kit, with the basics and a first aid kit. I have had a look at Halfords one, but dont know if its any good.

Kits

What are you opinions?

my breakdown kit consists of my mobile and my rac membership card.

there are of course precautions you could take for instance a blanket in wiinter and perhaps a first aid box or a warning triangle but things like a hammer i personally think would be a waste of money

I carry my spare (and associated tools), a can of tyre weld (you never know, you might punture two tyres), a first aid kit, and an RAC option 4 membership card.

Ok, been meaning to get breakdown cover too, just passed the IAM test so i now get discount off RAC and AA so just got to choose which one is best :)

I've got a small tool kit, which has basic sockets, a set of snips, pliers and some screwdrivers. I also have a set of jump leads and a multimeter. That's about it.

My thoughts go: If it's looked after properly, it shouldn't really break down, and if it does break down, even when it's looked after properly, then the fault will probably be past roadside fettling anyway.

I do have breakdown cover as well, mind. I do want to get back home somehow if it ever does break down :)

I tend to err on the side of caution... In my boot, I have:

Spare wheel, small socket set, screwdrivers, adjustable wrench, wheel brace, multimeter, tyre pump, wd40, carb cleaner, big torch, jump leads, gloves...

The list goes on - and I've actually used all of that stuff in a breakdown/non-start at one time or another...

Also carry my green flag membership card, as when you blow a driveshaft thorough over enthusiastic gearchanging, no amount of screwdrivers are going to get you home!

On an aside - I know a guy who used to carry a spare engine on the back seat of his Hillman Imp. It came in useful once, when the knackered engine in the back gave up the ghost, so he stopped in a layby, and spent a few hours in the sun changing the engines over by himself. Quality breakdown kit there!

I don't really carry any tools as such apart from a wheel brace but the front of the MR2 is full of stuff. I've got the spare plus jack as well as jump leads, tow rope, can of fuel and a footpump.

I've also got an RAC card as well if it's properly broken.

Pen & paper, a few spare bulbs (not intentionally I've just collected some spares from when I've bought uprated bulbs and kept the originals or needed one new bulb and could only find them in pairs), a pump and all the usual stuff to change a wheel.

Oh and a breakdown card :)

owning a 17 year old volvo, i really have some form of breakdown cover. I'll have to get round to buying some - especially as im going abroad for a week in June. (is european breakdown cover included in the top of the range cover for AA / RAC nowadays?)

other than that, i carry a few screwdrivers, jumpleads, tow rope and my mobile phone :D
