Breaking in shoes

Good socks are essential though.

Yes Sir, Lt. Feek :p

Remember to change your socks wherever we stop :)

keep the older ones handy and wear them after a couple of hours in the new ones - giving your feet a break is all you need - I done it for years with my foundry boots

Thanks chaps. Will go find a Compeet blister pack but will try a fabric plaster first. Here is one of my shoes and I've highlighted the area where it cuts into the back of my foot with both pairs of shoes. It's like the very top edge feels like it's digging in. So when I said heel, well it's not the underside of the foot on the heel bone, so I guess it's technically above the heel? Anyway, that's where I'll need to position the protection.

Both pairs only £20 each. I'm not sure this is leather upper, although it has a strong distinctive smell.

Man up? It's just leather. Unless you got some crappy trainers/shoes that are those fake leather ones. If so, suffer or guy buy some proper leather shoes.

I've found this as well. I used to use Bridgedale socks and suffered with blisters. I switched to Smartwool and the problem stopped. The Smartwool Mountaineering socks are the best things ever too!

Odd. Never had anything but supreme comfort in Bridgedale socks. I also have tried the Smartwool, but I found them seriously lacking in durability.

Whereas the Bridgedale last years, the Smartwool were falling apart after a few months.

When you say lasts years and falls apart in months do you mean you wear them all the time?

I have a pair of wigwam socks (as an example) that I bought several years ago and have put a couple of months on them (have multiple socks), and they're starting to look a bit worn, but then they are in hiking boots for 10-15 miles a day when they are worn.

The Bridgedales I've got, I bought them in 2013. I bought seven pairs and I wear them all the time. I walk a minimum of five miles/day, often nearer ten miles. As I said above, the only issue is that the elastic around the tops is starting to get a little loose.

Now that's hard wearing!

I tend to wear hiking socks for daily use, including just walking to/from work.

Dress socks are too thin, too poorly made, too cold... etc. And cotton is right out ;) My feet can get quite damp (as do hands, its a nervous disorder). Cotton just gets waterlogged and cold.

The Smartwool socks developed bald patches comparitively quickly. The Bridgedales were much better. Also tried Brasher but didn't rate them much, and some others (Thorlo?) which were synthetic but lasted really well. The Smartwool were the least durable of all of them.

I liked them before they wore out, I should say.

I bought some fabric plasters today and also these Blister plasters.

I imagine they're about the same as the Compeed except they're £1 compared to £6 for Compeed. I'll give them a try anyway.

Hmm, OP, maybe you could hire one of the bad-ass alphas from GD to break them in for you? Many people here are so alpha they are physically incapable of feeling pain.

I think there is an opportunity here for a business venture.

That's a good idea! :p
