Thinking of buying a Pentax X-5 which is now available for around £135.00 as it seems like a good buy being one step beyond a point and shoot camera but a lot cheaper than a starter dslr.

You need to choose what you want from the camera.
Do you want a small compact that give good image quality compared to the standard?
Do you want a camera with more manual controls?
Do you want a DSLR but cannot afford one?

I want something that will give good image quality, has manual controls (not just point and shoot) and isn't too expensive. The size and weight doesn't bother me much but I would like something with a 'reasonable' optical zoom. 1080p video recording would be a bonus but 720p would be fine. The x-5 just seemed like very good value although at higher ISO it doesn't seem great and iirc a slow shutter speed of up to 4 seconds seems low?

Essentially a camera that allows for more freedom at a good price.
