Need a present for a friend who is always going on about wanting a DSLR like me and wanting to replace his old compact. A few of us are going to pitch in and get him something for £200ish.

DSLRs are outside the budget as a second hand wouldn't be nice as a gift and the cheapest refurbs (which would be ok as most have warranties) start from £250.

So I'm looking at bridge and micro 4/3 cameras.

Any recommendations?

So far, the Olympus E-Pl1 is the only micro 4/3 I've seen at £200 and appears to be an entry level one.

Surely if he wants a DSLR it's pointless getting him something else. Better to club together for some Jessops vouchers or something?!

You can buy Canon refurbs from £200 with a 90 day warranty on ebay from the seller "hugosaleshop". The micro 4/3 system is incredibly expensive due to the extortionately priced lenses, and there is very limited range of them, £800 75mm anyone? Bridge cameras have very small sensors and poor low light performance in accordance with that. To summarise, a used SLR is your only real option. Or just pitch in an extra £20 each for a new one?
