Bring back rock and roll!!

Bring back the good old days with rock and roll and really bands! it's becoming less and less common now. all this techno/rap/hip hop, i dont even know what to call it, is just not as good!! cant beat a group with guitars and drums and base and hopefully someone who can sing!!!

rock n roll is the way to go! the way of life :D

Great, thanks.

Led Zeppelin were the first band to have the term 'heavy metal' attributed to them

No they weren't, it was Sir Lord Baltimore.

No they weren't, it was Sir Lord Baltimore.

It was Black Sabbath, as their debut album came out in 1970, and that self titled album was where 'heavy metal' supposedly began and was thought of as the first heavy metal album. Whereas the review which coined 'Heavy Metal' as a term was for Sir Lord Baltimore which was in 1971, if you want to be technical about it. :p

No, if you wanted to be technical about it you'd say "Black Sabbath are generally thought of as being the first heavy metal band but the first band to have the term attributed to them were Sir Lord Baltimore".

Sure, there were other bands like Led Zep or Blue Cheer or Flower Travellin' Band, but the consensus is the Black Sabbath were the first metal band. However, the first band to be CALLED heavy metal were SLB.

You're out by a few years.
Now my memory is sketchy and I'm going back to when I was a kid but a guy called Burroughs wrote a book in the early 60s which featured a character called The Heavy Metal Kid (later a band was called The Heavy Metal Kids who I saw a few times).
Some journalist when writing a piece on Led Zeppelin in 1968 obviously remembered the term and applied it in that review.
A bloke out of Blue Oyster Cult reckoned he first applied it to bands in 1970 but he was a fibber.

rock & roll is a genre, but I wouldn't say it's a dead one, I also wouldn't say most britpop fitted into it (as some seem to be suggesting)
rockabilly is the most rock and roll you'll generally get now musically, I think volbeat are very musically rock and roll (not sure you'd expect much else from "elvis metal") but I'm sure some will disagree

I think there's still plenty of talent out there. Tons of good bands / artists. But like usual, for ever 1 there are a plethora of bad ones.

I admit I hate r and b, rap and the like, but then 30 years ago I probably would've had similar hatred for a lot of the disco music too! :p

I find bands from a multitude of sources such as reading magazines, recommendations from friends, going to gigs, similar bands on LastFM, etc.

Anything top 40, etc I tend to avoid ..... its a matter of doing some work/research rather than letting yourself be spoonfed.

Why avoid top40? I don't go out of my way to listen to it, and as a result of having changed my car radio from radio 1 to rock radio in the past 6 months I've not really heard much chart music, however I won't just rule it all out as dross, if I hear something and I like it I couldn't care less what genre it falls into or how commercially successful it has been.

FAO dmpoole - if I may quote Brian Johnson,

"I'm an out and out basics man and AC/DC are one of the best rock 'n' roll bands in the world, doing things just to the basics, you know."

Teehee.

(Actually, I agree with everything you say, but this quote was stuck in my head - I'm a bit of an Accadacca freak, y'see...)
