Mandatory speed limiters to be fitted to all new cars in Europe after 2022

Following approval from MEPs, the European Transport Safety Council will impose mandatory speed limiters and data loggers on all new cars.

Sitting among a range of new safety features due for all new cars, the mandatory speed limiters come as part of a proposal from the European Transport Safety Council, recently approved by a group of key MEPs. Dubbed Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA), the limiters will use GPS data and/or traffic sign recognition cameras to determine the speed limit of the road a vehicle is travelling on. Engine power will then be limited to match this, preventing the car from exceeding the speed limit. It will be possible to override the system by pushing hard on the throttle, however the system will be engaged every time a car is started.

Legit? I can't see this being implemented in its current guise.

What’s the problem? If you want to break the speed limit you simply stand on your cars tail, like you do now.

The data logging however can do one.

If you think you can simply keep pressing a little harder on the throttle to break through the system, think again. ETSC also states that: ‘If the driver continues to drive above the speed limit for several seconds, the system should sound a warning for a few seconds and display a visual warning until the vehicle is operating at or below the speed limit again.

Why would Brexit shield us from these sorts of things?

If VW, Skoda, Seat, Audi, Porsche, BMW, Mercedes, Opel, Renault, Peugeot, Citroen, Fiat, Volvo etc etc have to implement this into all of their vehicles - they aren't going to suddenly start going through the rigmarole of disabling it just for the UK are they, especially if it's a touted as a safety feature?

so basically the same as the stop start system fitted to modern cars,

ignition on, stop start disengaged, now another button to press speed limiter disengaged.

It also makes the assumption that our own politicians wouldn't try and pass similar laws outside of the EU. Anyway, as far as I can see, it's not a done-deal and the vote is I think due in September where our MEPs get to vote on it...except we won't have any MEPs by then and so won't have a say, but will probably end up mirroring EU regulations anyway.

Whilst a few years away yet, it may use GPS data, but surely there will be an easy way to turn it off without some form of remap.

Could be downright dangerous and embarrassing if you took your shiny new car on a track day and a section of track goes too close to a local road, the GPS speed limiter makes you crawl along a section at 20mph. On the other hand though it might reduce depreciation or even make them go up in value on pre-2020 cars.

All this is does is make systems which are currently available standard fit. They are switchable. I find the speed limiter in my car one of the most useful functions and it'd be great if it was linked to the speed limit of the road in question.
