Hi all,

bit of an odd one this i have an idea for a product but i have no idea how i would go about doing it, is there anyway or anyone i can go to who can get the ball rolling, and tell me if its a flawed design/product, and if i should just forget about it.

On the other hand if it is a decent idea, and it could take off id like to be able to have it designed.

I would have thought the easiest way would be to get it prototyped to see if it works.
If it works you could setup a website and sell it your self. Order from china. Making sure you have clauses in so they don't copy it and make sure you get an example to see quality.
I expect (but have no idea) that getting it copyrighted/patent is expensive if you even can.

Prototype is a good idea, then maybe find some distributors if its a physical product. What kind of product is it?

First thing is patent it. My Grandad had a crane design stolen, and lost out on potentially hundreds of thousands, if not millions, because he didn't patent it.

Check for patents then apply if none exist, start prototyping

Damn, thing is there is a Patent, which is similar but its a very broad patent on how the invention works, thing is i reckon mine would be aimed more at mainstream, professional work enviroments, the one ove found is aimed at children.

Just to bring this back up instead of making a new thread, I've got an idea for a product which I really think can work, its something I've found myself looking for which doesn't exist. It's a very simple electronical device.

I've done a little bit of searching and found http://www.innovate-design.co.uk/, who take you through the patenting of the idea to designing and getting a prototype going. Would a company like this be the best way to take this forward or would I be better doing it myself? It does sound like the whole process is a painful and consuming affair. I guess they'll obv be requiring huge cashola upfront. Also, I'm a uni student (although doing a totally unrelated and no way contributive course), would this mean they own my idea if I came forward with it?
