Motherboard: MSI Z170A Gaming Pro Carbon
CPU: Intel Core i7-6700K
CPU cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO
GPU: Zotac GeForce GTX 1080 AMP Extreme
Case: Thermaltake Suppressor F51
Front fan: 200mm, whatever came with my case
Rear fan: 120mm, whatever came with my case
PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA NEX750B (fan pointing downward)

The GPU runs at 56-58C idle (20C ambient room temperature).

To me, that is high.

At load (2-minute FurMark stress test), it hits 75C, which is think is acceptable.

The temperatures in the rest of the system are decent (though the CPU goes to 70C during a 2-minute BurnInTest stress test, which is acceptable I guess).

Any suggestions of how to lower the GPU idle temperature? (photo of inside of case included)

I assume it doesn't save to the card's BIOS and I'd have to keep the program open in order to keep the custom curve? (not sure how it works)

Yeh, I just run Afterburner after everything else has loaded. You can set it to launch automatically, but if you're going to OC the card, I wouldn't recommend.

And it's not a good idea to use Furmark, it's considered a power/heat virus these days.

best program I have used is futuremark extreme stress test. Always maxes out my card temps

Add another intake fan to help blow some cold air across the card.

That does seem high though my 980 TI turns the fan off under 60oc are you sure that yours isn't also? If it does it does it to keep the noise down so considering the fans are not spinning if they ae not then the idle temps will be about right.

But to be honest you should be worrying about load temps more and if the card is ok at load then everything is fine.

OP have you got the card clocking down when idle? that could be a reason for the higher idle temps.
You'd have to tell me, to be honest. I'm not sure.

I think I will add another front fan

Your screenshot shows the GPU at 43 degrees, that's acceptable. Is the fan set to auto or have you set it to 10% speed manually?

GPUz will tell you your GPU's current clocks (i.e. whether it's clocking down at idle or not)

Also sorry dude but for god's sake tidy up the mess of cables you have at the bottom. Without sounding like I'm lecturing you that is too good of a card to have in that case in it's current state. :)

From a review of your GPU, the fans turn off under 60C so that would be why your idle temp is just under that. This is by design, and I honestly wouldn't worry about it, just enjoy the card.

If it really bothers you, as others have suggested you can run Afterburner in the background and have that set to control the fan curve to force the fans to stay on, but I really wouldn't worry. It will also assist your load temperatures if you can move the card (is that a WiFi card, or a soundcard, or a USB hub?) to a slot that isn't blocking the airflow to your fans - maybe to the PCI-E above the card, or right to the bottom one. Putting it in the bottom PCI-Ex16 slot won't affect the speed of the slot your GPU is in on your motherboard.

King Mustard>Hi we practically have the same setup more or less.

So I got the amp extreme as well very recently. Due to the way the card bios is teh fans will turn off at below 60c. And then at certain intervals it will spin up and then off again hence the higher idle temps.

The higher idle temps are not my concern it the intermittent ramping up of the fans and then off again that drives me insane. So what I did while not really a fix and more fo a bypass is use firestorm to set the fan profile when at certain temps to say something like 20-25% if the fans ramping up at certain levels don't bother you this should drop the idle temps down. Because the fan ramping drives me crazy I have set mine to 30%. Although the fans they use are certainly audible at 30% it not silent but it acceptable so it roughly idles between 35-40c.

With the fan off it idles at 44-48C although I currently don't have a PC case for the new setup although I would think if there was case the idle temps would go up much higher.

You can save the profile and get firestorm to load up the profile the next time you boot your pc up so it should idle at lower temps. I hope this helps.

Turns out the Power Management Mode in NVIDIA's Control Panel was set to "Prefer maximum performance" for some reason.

Changed it to the default "Optimal power" and now I'm idling at 40C, which is what the reviewers said theirs was all running at.
