I'm on a quest to build a comfortable and convenient gaming setup. My current idea is to ditch the desk and instead go with the reclining armchair, while bringing the monitor right in front of it. I don't care about aesthetics, as you'll see. I can picture it all working great in my head, and I have most of the tricky and expensive bits already.
I thought I'd come here and seek some opinions from the Master Race
. Perhaps people will talk me into better alternatives. So, picture these products combined:
1) Reclining armchair
2) Adjustable over-the-bed table
It's probably laughable
, but this is the key to the whole thing. I've got this already. It fits over the chair. The main surface tilts, and the keyboard and mouse can rest on it just fine. Those are both wireless. I'm using a mousepad with wrist padding, to stop the mouse falling.
3) Wooden board
The table's surface is fairly high, so, despite the tilt, it's uncomfortable to use it for long periods. A long wooden board solves the problem for me
. It rests perfectly on the chair and, combined with some padded wrist support for the keyboard, everything is at the right height. I'm sure some ergonomics consultants would flinch, but my wrists have not complained, for years now. When I want to move my legs up, or just recline the chair to watch a film, I just rest the board on the table and push it forward a bit.
Now for the new ideas, to complete the picture...
4) 2nd extension piece for the table
I want to rest the front speakers on these.
5) Monitor arm with clamp
This is crucial. If only I can get this just right! There are so many considerations. Weight of the arm, weight of the monitor (I'm planning for an ultrawide soon), total reach of the arm, the clamp system, cable management, monitor downward tilt, etc. I've looked around, and these things are expensive, and might not be fit for my purposes.
If I want to keep the table tilted, I think I'll have to clamp the arm on one of the extension pieces of the table, which will probably push their specifications to the limit... 12-15 kilos combined with the monitor - risky! Plus, the longest arm I've seen so far is ~60 cm - just barely enough.
Hmm. I might sacrifice the tilt of the table. I could then clamp the monitor arm on it, making the requirements placed on both more reasonable. The extra reach I'll gain might even allow the monitor to come close enough in front of me to feel like VR..
. Without the tilt, I can easily rest the centre speaker on the table as well, solving another first world problem
. The table is quite high though, which pretty much precludes any typing while seated. Perhaps I can fit some angled supports on my wooden board. That thing is already a bit ghetto anyway
.
I think that completes the picture. The PC and AV/subwoofer will on the wall in front of the chair. One concern I have is with the length of the cables. Is it true that DisplayPort cables should be kept sort? (link). My target resolution will be 3440 x 1440, so this could be tricky. Any experiences with cables longer than 3m guys?
