I'm thinking about having a few nights in Bristol next week. I've not been in some years, but loved it last time I went. However, concerned that it may be a waste of time at the moment.

I'd be coming down Wednesday and leaving Saturday. I get the curfew, that's fine. I'll just go out for dinner earlier. Are bars (especially the cider boat) mainly open? Do you need to book beforehand? Are the markets open? Basically, is it business as normal as it is in Glasgow or quite restricted?

Also, any good vegan (or at least restaurants with a vegan menu) for a fancy dinner? Bit last minute, but hey ho.

And finally, if I drive down where's best to park?

I haven’t been into the centre since lockdown, but be sure to pop into brewdog (right next to the boat, on the corner where the small bridge is) for some cracking ales if you do decide to go :-D

Went a few weeks ago, stayed at the Marriott Royal (nice, but parking the fat assed wagon was nerve wracking!). Managed to get a good gander around the port, visit SS Britain and do various touristy stuff without much hassle beyond a facemask and copious amounts of hand sanitiser. All the restaurants and bars on the waterfront were buzzing on the Sunday afternoon and the market was open, so unless something has changed massively I would think you'll be fine.

Three Brothers on the Welsh Back is a great burger restaurant and does around 7 different vegan options. Then you can head round the corner to Creams for dessert which offers vegan ice creams waffles etc. You'll most likely need to book.

I'm actually away at the moment in Brighton so only have my mobile but I can give you some top tips and advice when I'm back and have a keyboard. What's your vibe? Just you coming down or with a partner?

Generally, everything is business as usual, apart from the usual COVID stuff and 10pm kick out.

Hipstery, arty places. Good cocktails. Craft beer (cider?). Vegan food. Seafood. Arcade machines. That’s basically our life!

Aye, coming down with her. I’d also be going out to Chipping Sodbury (though the amazing sweet shop there is long gone!) for a few hours.

Awesome, I'll give you some recommendations that'll well and truly tick those boxes when I'm back later. Do you know where you're staying yet?

Not yet, it'll be a very last minute decision (probably depending mostly on the weather forecast). Somewhere like Hotel du Vin, Mercure Grand, or Marriott Royal. Looking at the map, probably old city.

Cool, yeah, as a resident I probably know least about hotels but take a look at Brooks Guesthouse and Harbour Hotel too. Presume you want a hotel rather than an Airbnb?

For the best real cider experience in central Brizzle you need The Orchard Inn, 12 Hanover Place BS1 6XT. No frills at all, the interior is underwhelming at best, but a smashing selection of SW ciders and hot pies.

City center seems very much business as usual. Waterfront and docks are busy. If you're driving through the center though your satnav probably won't be up to date, we've had some recent changes with bus lanes and directions etc, only minor but could have you going round in circles if you don't know the roads here!

This is the info I need! cheers!
Love a pub with a pie oven.

Not actually looked at Airbnb’s tbh but cool with that as well. Maybe there’s a boat Airbnb!

Alright, I'm home and with keyboard!

First up, I'm bias because I live here but I'd recommend Bedminster/Southville for the hipstery/artsy vibe. We're home to Europe's largest street art festival (Upfest) so the main road, North Street, as well as various side roads are adorned with street art. Start at Baynton Road for a ridiculously cool piece from Insane 51 (if you happen to own some red/blue 3D glasses, take them along), then head up North Street and keep your eyes out and don't forget to look back and up, some are more obvious than others. On the way you'll pass Bristol Beer Factory tap room (brewpub), Tobacco Factory (pub/bar and maker's market), Malago (restaurant, good all-round but esp. for brunch), Pizza Workshop, Tin Can (good coffee), Upfest (art shop), Kask (wine bar), Old Bookshop (bar), Spotted Cow (pub) and finish up at North Street Standard (pub). Plenty of other independent shops and places in between, and another 5 minute walk and you'll get to Bristol Gin Distillery, in an industrial estate but good vibes, drinking next to the stills and they do cocktails too.

King Street is a must. It's been pedestrianised since COVID-19 so there's more outdoor seating, you just won't get people piling out into the streets as you used to. Don't miss Small Bar, owned by local brewery Left Handed Giant and do good food (mostly chicken, but I'm sure some vegan), Kong's has got some free and paid-for arcade machines, Old Duke for spit 'n sawdust and live music (that'll be the most different during COVID, sadly), Old Vic bar (yes it's a theatre, but the bar is really nice and if they need the custom it's now more than ever!), Beer Emporium, the Apple (cider boat), and anywhere else that takes your fancy. There's a Brewdog pub nearby too as mentioned but you can find one of those in any town and city nowadays!

On that note local breweries include Wiper & True, Left Handed Giant, Lost & Grounded, Wild Beer, Arbor Ales, Good Chemistry and Bristol Beer Factory. You'll see at least one on most menus. Left Handed Giant have also got another brewpub at Finzels Reach that's class (good pizzas, all vegan), Wild Beer at Cargo, Bristol Beer Factory on North Street and the rest have tap rooms which I'm not sure will be open atm and are in industrial estates anyway.

Definitely go to Cargo, a cargo-container development like Box Park by the harbour. All the restaurants are good, so depends what you fancy or what's good for vegans. Gambas do good seafood, you can get baos, pizza, fish n chips, ice cream, etc. Wild Beer's bar is there. Tare and Root are also there, both fancy restaurants which I'm sure do vegan (latter is veggie-only). 7 Lucky Gods is one of our favourite restaurants but mainly for the meat dishes.

For cocktails take your pick from Milk Thistle, Hyde & Co or Red Light (I'd put them in that order). They're late-night venues but given the 10pm curfew you'll want to be doing an early dinner and then an 8-10 sitting or something.

Also worth a walk from Stokes Croft (from The Full Moon pub) all the way up to Cheltenham and Gloucester Road (roughly to Baker & Co, not much different further up). Again loads of street art, coffee shops, bars, restaurants etc. I hear Koocha Mezza Bar is amazing for vegans, and there's even an Owwee Vegan burger place on Picton Street (takeaway only, I think). There's another on Baldwin Street in the centre too. Also worth checking out St Nick's Market for lunch.

If the weather's nice it's difficult to beat Bristol and I'd recommend walking around the harbour, via Arnolfini art gallery and to Spoke & Stringer area. The Bag of Nails nearby is a cat pub... if that's your thing (and no idea what they're doing during COVID). You can get a little boat across the river to SS GB side which is quaint.

If you're heading to Clifton for the obligatory view of the Suspension Bridge then all the pubs on or near Princess Victoria Street are good, but The Albion is one of the better ones and it's tucked down an alley so easily missed. It's next to Clifton Arcade too. Nothing there is arty or hipstery, mind.

I'd happily put together a full itinerary for you :D but I won't go that far... just let me know if you've got any Qs depending on where you're staying etc.

Aluna make some pretty nice cocktails

Pipe and Slippers on Cheltenham road do a really nice one called 'Pipe Dream'

Edit: @Russinating gave you a pretty thorough guide to be honest! Left Handed Giant and Hyde and Co are both really nice places. LFG in the summerf was nice. If Cider is you thing The Apple is really nice

Thanks @Russinating . Looks perfect. Annoyingly, we can't find anyone to look after our dog for 3 nights (can only get 2 nights and a 6 hour minimum drive seems far too far for only one whole day). So this trip may be delayed but appreciate your work!

Went there a few weeks ago with the wife - Everything was open and it was a really nice weekend!

Can't bring with? Some Airbnbs may be dog friendly, and certainly every pub/restaurant etc is.

A guy near us even has dogs stay at his overnight for £30: https://oofwoofwalkies.com

Are the pubs and restaurants pretty dog friendly down there? Didn’t fancy the stress of worrying where we could go. Though if we stay at an Airbnb, he can be left there for a bit whilst we eat..can neevr do that at hotels

Yeah, at least 90% allow dogs. Maybe some down at Wapping Wharf don't but that's because they're small; Wild Beer does. Literally every single one on North Street does apart from North Street Standard for some reason.

Obviously double check ahead but yeah, very dog friendly.

Just spoke to Hotel Du Vin, who are very dog friendly. My biggest cocern with a hotel would be that you can't leave them which makes dinner a problem but it turns out they are OK with him being left! So I think this is a go'er!

So sure, if you want to give some more specific tips now we're thinking of staying at Hotel Du Vin I'd be all ears. I'd be especialy interested in hearing about restaurants as feel we are going to have to book every dinner (going to be Wednesday - Saturday). Though I like the ideas you've put up - and, if we are going during the week then I don't imagine we'd have to book many pubs for an afternoon pint.

Edit - Booked Milk Thistle and then Tare for Thursday evening. Annoyingly, Root is full on every day. Going to book Wild Beer Co for Friday evening.
