Bristol Uni Resnet - Are they blocking port 25

I need port 25 to pickup my personal email but can't really understand what they state in the policy about it.

So are they blocking port 25 for [email protected] email smtp?

Almost certainly (if they're not, then they should).

You shouldn't be running a server on their network and you don't need SMTP to collect your mail.

Huh, I'm not running a server. It's just my web host provider which is QIQ. It's simply so I can send email in Windows Live Mail?

I use IMAP to pickup my email which works fine but I can't seem to send any emails.

Inbound or outbound? I am sending email so I guess it's outbound?

I suppose they might have blocked outbound port 25 to prevent machines infected with bots sending spam, on the grounds that most people use webmail these days. Ask them?

Use 587 or 465, or relay your mail via one of their SMTP servers.

Changed to 587 and it worked.

Relaying by their server is going to screw you if your provider uses SPF records - probably not but keep it in mind...
