im supposed to be on 20mb from virgin media now but i realised that my router only supports 11mbps so performance is hindered, and my router is nameless.. cant find it anywhere

i was looking at the NetGear DG834G which seems good, however it says 100 mbps for network data transfer rate, wireless 54 mbps

so does that mean the 100 and 54 are for lan only? how much will it support coming through online? 54 mbps? or is it less?

thanks

I assume you already have a cable modem so what you should be looking for is a new wireless router to go with it.

The DG834 is an ADSL router which includes and ADSL modem that you don't need.

Your cable modem probably has a 100Mb LAN connection and that will link to your router so that matches to the 100Mb network spec on the DG834.

The 54Mb spec is for the wireless side only.

More to the point, the DG834G wouldn't work - it won't work as a router if you connect the modem to one of the switch ports (so you would only be able to connect one machine at a time, which defeats the point of buying a router), and you can't connect it to the WAN interface.

If you are after a general use wireless router for cable, go for the Netgear WGR614 54Mbps Wireless Cable DSL Router :)

Can't you just phone VM and ask for a compatible one to be sent? After all, your paying for a service that you aren't getting the full benifits of. :)

if it was the modem, then they would replace it, but anything beyond the modem is up to the customer. its not VMs fault that a customers router doesnt support the full speed.
