Hi everyone

Got a bit of a strange problem.

Do some web development so have a local web server that is connected through a router to my personal PC and this router is also used for BB connection.

Upgraded to Sky a week or so ago and put in the new Sky router as the other router belonged to work. BB worked fine.

Booted up the web server last night and when I do that the BB goes off and I can get no external sites. Just get DNS error pages in IE. Turn the server off again and the BB comes back on.

Any ideas?

Cheers

Have you got a DHCP server on the network as well as on the router? Can you MSPaint a diagram of what you've got?

hi nexy, i hope this is what you are after.

it's just a home network and as I do bit of web development i have a server to make programming various sites a lot easier.

The server doesnt run as a DHCP server, I dont think, at least I didnt set it up to do that.

I just installed Win2003 and then chose the default network settings and it has always worked for a while until the new router went in.

I can access the settings on the router, but no idea what anything means in there.

cheers

Sounds to me like an IP address conflict, i'm assuming your local dev server has a fixed ip address? maybe the router has stolen it for itself. If your server does have a fixed ip address try changing it and see if that helps.
Or you can change the ip addy of your router its upto you, but seeing as you said you can log into router but don't have a clue of what it means i'd try the former 1st.

What IP addresses, subnet masks and default gateways have you got on each device? Is there anything helpful in the event logs of the machines?

Hi Guys

Here's a weird update on my problem.

Checked IPs and subnets etc and all looked ok, but then after a bit of testing came across this weird situation.

Unplugged server from the router.
Started a big download and ran a bit of software to graph my connection.
Steady at 700kbs for 5 mins.
Turned the server on (remember it's unplugged from the router and therefore is standalone) and the connection just dropped within 5 seconds.

Thought it was something do to with my telephone extension cable running near my server, so pulled it away, but still the same.

However, if I leave my server on and restart my client PC, the connection comes back fine on my client and I have a network with an internet connection as it should be.

V weird. If anyone can shed any light on it, that would be a miracle

It's like the server projects some massive magnetic field that makes the client drop the connection and then only a restart will sort it out.
