Hi Folks.

I'm moving into a new flat within the next few days and thought i'd visit the Virgin website to order some broadband. To my shock, they said my new address (444, CF14 5ES) was not in a cable area and I could only have 2.5mbps - 4.5mbps through a phone line.

Now I thought this was a bit hard to believe so I did a bit of reading on the forums and saw a few websites which check the location of exchanges and check the available speeds for the address.

They've returned the following;

SamKnows.com - "BT FTTC broadband availability
You are connected to the Llanishen telephone exchange.

FTTC is available in your area

Downstream Min: 36.7 Mbps
Downstream Max: 76.5 Mbps
Upstream Min: 6.1 Mbps
Upstream Max: 20 Mbps

» Matched result using the postcode you provided"

and

BT WHOLESALE

For Postcode CF14 5ES

Your exchange is ADSL enabled, and our initial check on your postcode indicates that your line should be able to have an ADSL broadband service that provides a fixed line speed up to 1Mbps. However due to the length of your line the 1Mbps service may require an engineer visit who will, where possible, supply the broadband service.

Our check also indicates that your line currently supports an estimated ADSL Max broadband line speed of 3Mbps; typically the line speed would range between 2Mbps and 5.5Mbps.

Our check also indicates that your line should be able to have an ADSL2+ broadband service that provides a fixed line speed up to 1Mbps. However due to the length of your line the 1Mbps service may require an engineer visit who will, where possible, supply the broadband service.

Our check also indicates that your line currently supports an estimated ADSL2+ broadband line speed of 3Mbps; typically the line speed would range between 2.5Mbps and 6.5Mbps.

Your cabinet is planned to have WBC FTTC by 31st December 2012. Our test also indicates that your line currently supports a fibre technology with an estimated WBC FTTC Broadband where consumers have received downstream line speed between 36.7 to 76.5 Mbps and upstream line speed between 6.1 to 20 Mbps.

Could anyone clarify whats available for me?

Thanks.

Assuming you have a BT phone line available you should have the option of a slow ADSL connection or a good FTTC connection (e.g. BT Infinity).

Without a phone number to check against you can't be absolutely sure that the FTTC option will be available.

Thanks guys. Ordered 2/3mb broadband but BT said they'll upgrade me for free when it becomes avaliable. 4 weeks of pain..

Dont Read into that Date too much it WILL change 31st December is a holding date and very likely to slip, my FTTC date on that check changes by 3 months everytime it hits the actual date so on 31st December it will then say avaliable by March 31st it will get done eventually but dont put your eggs in one basket its just a holding date
