Hey peeps, was thinking about signing up to talk talk for its broadband connection (mainly only for gaming) and i was wondering if anyone has anything to say about them?

i already have a telewest 10meg line in which 3 others share with me and playing games can get tad annoying when were all on at the same time so what do you reckon?

the line wont cost me anything ontop of my monthly outgoingings as it will be paid for by my 2nd contract phones termination.

worth it or not?

thanks

first off have a look at there T&C (its 14+ pages) secondly have a look on adslguide.org.uk in there forums (do a search for talk talk) and then realise that packet shaping and p2p restrictions will cut the socalled 8mb line down to nearly 56k levels :(

I saw there offer on tv the other day £20.98 per month including line rental sounded fantastic for 8mb and free phone calls, but when i looked into it i ran like a gazelle hunted by a lion :(

It was the case (before anyway) that their shaping killed games.
cheers dude. not looking too good so far.

might try and convince my parents to drop the cable phone line and take a bt one, move them onto be24meg broadband and keep the telewest 10meg to me self... will cost me more but i think benefit most from it.

unless i can somehow get out of the contract with talk talk on the understanding that if its no good for me gaming then i can get out without being penalised.. but i dont think that will be the case.

thanks

Surely your 10meg blueyonder line is more than capable for 3 people online gaming, plus p2p and anything else...

I run Limewire all the time, even when my sister and dad are each downloading I can still play games with no lag on my 10meg.

As Nildram are a Pipex owned company, surely it's only a matter of time before they implement an indiscriminate shaping policy e.g. 24/7 P2P throttling to 20KB/s?

Maybe also consider Eclipse as they're a favourite amoung gamers?

According to Nilly tech support. They will never be doing this as Althou they are part of the pipex group they are still a private company and pipex have no sayso as to what they do.

the line is more then capable most of the time but i think my wireless router messes things up abit and also the upload is only384kbs so no good when we're all on together :( (im hard wired)

Are there any companies left that are not going to "shape" their bandwidth?

It's everywhere now, whenever it seems a good deal they have a fair usage policy. in my eyes, it's unfair, as i've paid that much money so i want the whole service the whole of the time. if the ISP isn't capable of having such a high speed with so many people then don't try and provide it!

There must be some companies around using this to their advantage and specifically saying "we don't limit p2p bandwidth" or something.

The problem with this is that the service will inevitably suffer. I think ISPs need to be upfront about what they're offering and not try to regulate services via covert amendments to their T&Cs.

The problem is that versus the £1.4M an ISP's paying for a 622Mbps Central, you ain't getting a huge share for what you pay, so ultimately the majority getting useable web browsing takes priority over the handful that want to max out P2P all times of the day and night.
The only time it's a huge issue is if the ISP tries to behave like Plusnet, and pack users on right up to the session limit, and squeeze their costs down as low as possible.

Anybody actually on the Talk Talk broadband deal who can recommend it?

I dont play any online games and very rarely use P2P. Using telewest broadband at the moment and it's costing me roughly £44 a month with talk unlimited on the phone line.

Seems cheap for what their offering but would be grateful if anybody using it can give their opinions.

P.S. To the OP sorry for slightly hijacking your thread but did'nt want to open a new one on the same topic.
