Hi
So last wednesday our house was struck by lightning,on thursday we discovered the phone wasn't working (couldn't make outgoing calls, could receive incoming calls, even though there was a dial tone if someone rang the phone but we couldn't hear it ring out)

The phone works though if you plug out the modem, you can make calls and receive calls but once you plug the internet back the phone won't work.

any ideas as too what could be wrong?we've been going back and forth to both eircom and vodafone like headless chickens, each of them saying it's the others problem

any advice greatly appreciated

Someone on another forum recommened this too,we have 6 phone points in the house,we have 2 phones and one other point in use in the internet room for modem,so
would the other 3 points need a filter too even though there not in use?

No you would only need a filter where you have anything else plugged in. So a filter must go before any phones, satellite boxes or anything else that uses the phone line.

I would just unplug everything and try the modem and phone in one socket with a new microfilter.

If that works, plug your other things back in one by one, testing between each. That way you can find out where the fault is.

Hope that helps.

I used to live in the middle of nowhere in the country side so I know what kind of damage lightning can do. I've had countless of phones, modems and power supplies destroyed :-(

Thanks for the replies

Just the two phones then and the modem

Do overclockers sell filters?seem to be very hard to get ireland or else there just stupidly expensive

So we rang vodafone again and there sending us out a new modem, which we'll have to pay for,79 frickin euro, personally I don't see how it can be the modem when the internet is working :-/

anyone care to explain that to me?:p

Refund the modem. That's not going to help.

If you search on the jungle and search "ADSL filter" you can find some as cheap as a few pounds.

Well, the modem is a modem, it still needs ADSL filters to work. And from the sound of your current problem, it sounds like the filters aren't doing the job anymore, the lightning might've caused them to be unable to unfilter the telephone signals from the broadband signals anymore. A modem will get confused without a fully working filter as it will mistake the telephone signals for broadband signals.

Also, €79? That sounds like a rip off for an ISP supplied modem .

Yeh I would say that 79 sounds a bit steap for a bog standard ISP modem.

Filters cost nothing m8 they are only a few quid and that's probably going to be the
route of your problem as well.

The filter prevents noise from analogue items going into the modem and high frequency noises going into analogue items. You can run a modem without a filter but you then must not use any telephone items.

The filter itself is just a simple low pass filter and that's why it's cheap.

If you can connect with your modem then it's working. It could be introducing noise to the line but that's another issue.

You can buy modem routers for less than £10 second hand and even new for less than £30. There's no reason to take a £79 modem just because that's what your ISP sells.

Thanks for all your replies I appreciate them

So the new modem came on tuesday and it came with two new filters,so first we took out the old filters and tested the new ones and it was still the same so we set up the new modem with the new filters and it worked,I agree with ye though 79 euro was way too much for a new modem wasn't happy about that but what can ya do

also speed has been shocking

Joke considering I was getting 16,17Mb/s 2 weeks ago

were still using copper over here in ireland, fibre optic is been rolled out but at a really slow pace, how does that speed compare to some speeds you get in the uk?

Quite a lot in the country side don't even get 2mb. Most of the high speed fibre is usually in cities as it gains more profit due to more customers on an exchange/cabinet.

Maybe post your router stats detailing attenuation, noise margin and what not. That's quite a significant drop in speed but it's unclear if it's just ISP dragging it down or the actual line. You might also want to test the router directly in the test socket and compare the results between the two.
