I am using a netgear DG834 router, and have the following statistics on my connection:

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 8128 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 23 db 10.5 db
Noise Margin 14 db 25 db

My speeds are no faster than standard adsl however, at 512kb download.

Firmware has been updated to the latest version Firmware Version V3.01.25
but still no luck.

My package isn't limited to 512mb

The calculator from the sticky tells me "ADSL Line Capability Calculator
A crude estimate of what your line is capable of is 8192kbps (kilo bits per second).

This figure is based largely on your current Signal to Noise ratio, and current line speed. The results you may obtain in practice are likely to vary, and thus this figure should only be used to estimate your lines capability."

Also BT "how fast can i go" tells me i should get 8meg.

Any suggestions?

Also to consider is your contention ratio (most likely 50:1 or perhaps 20:1 if a more expensive package).

You are competing with (potentially) 49 other users for the available 8mbit. Whilst in burst you may get up to the full 8mbit, in practise you wont get it very often.

Divide the 8mb by 50 and this should be the lowest you will ever get. You can use a speedtester such as one from adslguide.org (i think thats right) to check your present download/upload speeds. Running the test at different times of day will give you an idea of what you can roughly expect...

In practise with my 8mb connection I often got about 100kbytes/s or so (800mbits/s), about a tenth of the rated line speed.

I have had the connection for approx 3 months.
Also having met my neighbours, there are only 2 possibly 3 suspected internet users on the street, the rest would probably frown on anything more complicated than a microwave.

I am planning on phoning plusnet in the next 30 or so minutes so I will post their response afterwards.

Plusnet's response is that they havent got round to putting my line upto higher speeds yet, and rather than keep it at 2mb like it was at my previous address, they dropped it to 500kb in preparation to test at higher speeds. They have promised that this will be done in the next 10 working days, and the highest stable speed will be kept as my normal speed

BTW no longer quote contention ratios on ADSL products and have not done so for quite a while now.

For a line syncing at 8128 the fault level for throughput is considered to be 400kbps for Max and 800kbps for Max Premium
