Broadband speed affected by lights?

Edit: OK, just turned on the hallway lights again, and same problem still occurs. Internet slowed down, my internet radio is struggling to buffer, CRC events just went from 0 to 1604 in about 25 seconds. Lights off, straight back to normal again. Aaaaargh!

Ouch, sounds like your telephone cabling is running right along side your electrical wiring.

Apologies if teaching how to suck eggs. Electrical current runs on AC, which can induce a current in copper wiring if run along side it and electromagnetic interference. So basically as soon as you turn on your lights, its inducing a current along your telephone cabling, causing packet corruption (CRC errors).

Fix: Try to find a socket that isn't affected. Might not be possible if daisy-chained between sockets. Or re-wire....

Spoken to BT, they've re-profiled the line so at least that's ruled out now. Speeds are still no better really. Contacted an electrician to come and have a look at the wiring in question, just waiting to hear back now.

Just confirm that when you moved the router..... into the other room it was ok till you switched the lights back on is that right?

Yep, every socket I tried was pretty similar in terms of line stats, sync speed and of course, the CRC errors when the lights are switched on.
