Broadband speeds using wireless ?

I have recently moved house and used to have a sub 1Mb BB line.

My hub is reporting a line speed of 7.2 Mb.

I have my PC connected via a wireless PCI card to the hub, of which the hub is rated at 54Mbps.

I normally get between 80% to 94% signal strength and a network speed of 54Mbps.

When i run a line speed check on my PC it tells me i'm getting 3.3Mb on my line.

Is my hub reporting the wrong speed or am i limited in the network speed by the hub's limit of 54Mbps ?

54Mbits per second is far faster than the 7.2Mbits per second that your connection is giving.

So your connection is being throttled or the connection to the test server is poor.

Things may change over the next 2 days anyway. Even though BT said it was 5 working days for transferring the BB service they said it woyuld'nt be active until this friday (14th sept).

I just thought i would plug the router in and see if anything happened and hey presto it was live. The line's had a couple of days to settle down now.

I was just sceptical as to what the hub was reporting speedwise.

If i have time tonight i will try an ehternet cable from PC to the hub to see if the speeds are the same or not.

I thought BB line speed was in mega BYTES per second and the lan speed was in mega BITS per second making 54Mbps slower than the line ?

the chances of getting 54Mbits per second over wireless are slim to none. its all to do with interferance/range and many other factors.

an average speed of a non draft n wireless router will be around 8-10mbps.

wire yourself up, then you will get the best speeds

No its in mega BITS per second, divide your number by 8 to get your megaBYTEs persecond

Disregard that comment, I just realised that i was being a biff...lol, if it was bytes that would be bloody fast.... :rolleyes:

I will try a cable and see if the speed is better.

I will only need to drill through 1 wall and take the cable round some of the skirting and coving, not in a position to be able to hide wires in the walls and have faceplates to plug a drop lead into.

Dissapointing result really. Wehn i connect my PC with ethernet cable the speed test is slower, about 2Mb. :mad:

Also, from my laptop on wireless i get 6Mb over wireless and 7Mb using a ethernet cable.

Wondering if my MTU for my PC needs sorting ?

Something is not right.
