Anyone know if the follow stats on my broadband line are good or bad?

ADSL: 6144kbps (down)
ADSL:448kbps (up)

Line attenuation: 39db (down)
Line attenuation: 22db (up)

Noise margin: 6db (down)
Noise margin: 25db (up)

In a nutshell, since this saturday my connection has been absolutely diabolocal, on Saturday evening I was connected at 192kpbs!!! Yet BT say there is no problems with my line and it's my PC. However I've tried 5 different 'devices' today on my line (2 pc's, 2 laptops and a console) and each one has very slow connection.

Are those figures a cause for alarm or do they look about right?

Look good to me, a sync of 6144 should see a max of 600KB/Sec.

Maybe your IP profile [BRAS] has gone downwards due to a low sync event.

To find it out you need to go here http://test.speedtester.bt.com/ It will tell you your profile, but it takes a while to get it to work, best trying early morning. Your IP profile should be 5000.

Thanks for the response. I've had excellent connection for nearly 3 years now, it's just the last week it's gone awfully slow.

What do you mean by this though...

Don't understand what [BRAS] is?

It's the actual data rate, the actual speed at which you can download. You have a profile which should be 5000, if you have a low sync event, the profile drops down to match your lower sync speed. Thereafter it takes 3 full days to get back to your normal speeds once your sync is up again.

Thanks for explaining that, didn't realise there was such a thing!

Well ran several tests this evening, this time using 3 different routers to see if my router was at fault, and whilst each router is saying my DSL speed is between 6700 and 7600, the bandwidth tests are all coming back at around an average speed of 96kbps!!!!!

So something is seriously amiss!

Thanks again.

*edit*

Just run that test you mentioned at http://test.speedtester.bt.com/ and I get:

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:
IP profile for your line is - 135 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 6144 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 103 kbps

If you wish to discuss these results please contact your ISP.

If you are experiencing problems with specific applications, servers or websites please contact your ISP for assistance. Your test has completed please close this window to exit the performance tester.

Crikey!!!

Well i'm still battling to get between 500 - 600 kbps out of bt (like my neighbours) despite being told that a fault was fixed.

just ran this test:

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:
IP profile for your line is - 135 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 256 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 96 kbps

I keep telling them that the upstream and downstream figures are the wrong way round.

Just out of interest, is your name Plasmahal based on the little place just outside Swansea? Just wondered if it was a regional thing.

~J~ Your profile is extremely low, leave your router connected for 3 solid days, if it does not speed up after 3 days you'll have to contact your ISP and tell them you have a stuck BRAS profile. It is important that you do not reboot or resync as this will start the 3 day process all over again.

Been left on constantly now for nearly 3 days solid and my IP Profile has DROPPED to 96!!!

Had an email from BT saying there's nothing wrong with the line, but speaking to someone at their call centre, they say there is a definate fault which could take upto 2 weeks to fix!

NOT a happy chappy!!!!

This might be useful.

Not quite. If you resync at a lower rate you'd have reset the clock, but otherwise there isn't a problem.

If your BRAS limit's dropped to 96kbps without your modem hitting a sync rate that low, something's gone badly wrong and you need to get your ISP to deal with it, and keep poking them with sticks till they do.
Does the SNR margin vary, or the (downstream) sync rate vary (especially downwards in both cases)?

If I leave the machine and don't view any web-pages, the download is generally between 90-110kbps.

As soon as I go to a webpage, that drops to about 20k.

Uploading though, I can upload at around 600kbps so it's purely the downstream that's gone to pot.

As a simple example, hitting F5 on the OcUK forums generally refreshes at around a second, providing there are no other webpages downloading.

But going to a brand new site (for example, tried to go to www.engadget.com which I haven't visited for a week) and all the new pictures that are there, as well as the new adverts, text, etc, etc, took about 3mins to download. In some cases, but not all, the pictures just have the red-cross in them as if they haven't been downloaded.

My neighbour has been pretty supportive, allowing me to jump onto his wireless whilst he switches his computer on. But his wife's a bit of a power-saver so he switches everything off at 19:00 resulting in me going back to this pile of poo!

Will have to see what BT say again tomorrow. I doubt I can claim for loss of earnings, but not been able to dial into works VPN is not gonna go well with my boss and why should he pay me if I can't do owt?

Is this absolute gospel? In my experience leaving the connection up for 3 days solid is the only way to get the speed back up, I've seen many times if I reboot/resync at the same sync it never speeds up, I have to leave it 3 days.
