Our broadband was in my wife’s name and was with BT and had 1 month left to run on a 2 year contract.

I’ve just haggled out a deal with EE for essentially the same speed package but with the new smart hub 3 router and saving £20 a month.

My question is will my wife need to now cancel/give notice to BT or will EE just take over the line?

If it is Openreach then you don't need to contact the old provider. The new and old providers will work out the details themselves and both send you letters.
I have to say that I am not sure whether you can switch if you are not the account holder.

When you sign up, you usually confirm if you are the current bill payer, or that you have their permission. That's the part of the process which switches the line over.
When I set it up the guy I spoke to never mentioned anything about the current broadband just that the service would go live on dec 8

More information needed, did you give them your landline number to port over? Are you having FTTP installed and are currently on FTTC?

What is most likely to happen is that it will be treated as a service migration, though if you have a month left on your contract you can expect BT to charge you a small early termination fee to cover from the 8th Dec to whenever the original two year contract expired.

have had FTTP for the last 4 years so it should just be the case of them porting it over and that looks to be what’ll happen the wife has just received an email saying the line will be taken over on the 8th and that she’ll just have a final payment of £16

I do currently have digital voice with BT but as far as I’m aware EE just do the broadband only service if it’s FTTP so I’ve put in a call to A&A who can set me up with voip number for £1.44 a month so cheaper than the fiver BT charge for digital voice.
