Broadband usage allowance?

Hi all,

I'm currently with IDNet on an ADSL service. Due to streaming HD TV, films, gaming etc. I'm looking to upgrade to their Fibre service, but for the price I'm prepared to pay they're only offering a 200GB per month allowance.

So, my question is how can I find out what sort of allowance I'd need? How much data does a 2hr HD film (Netflix or Sony) use for example? Or 3 hours of streaming iPlayer in HD?

I'd prefer to stay with IDNet as the service I've had over the years has been flawless and I can't be arsed to change our email addresses, lol. However, ZEN are offering unlimited usage for the same cost....

Any advice please?

Move to the unlimited package.
Average film in 1080p can be around 1.5 to 2GB in size but you'll always be paranoid about going over the limit.

Move to Gmail / Outlook for email.

Plusnet/BT have unlimted at great prices.

200GB is a fair whack.

Ask them how much you currently use. Probably a good guide for you.

You don't need to change your email, at least with every other service provider I've been with they don't remove email addresses unless they become inactive, IDnet might differ though but not sure if you have to worry about that.

Having a data allowance in this day and age is a kick in the teeth to be honest with you, switch to Plusnet as mentioned above, great service and CS that you can understand(Well they're from the north so not perfect just better :D)

Thanks for all the advice! Bledd, we used about 100GB last month, which was when we started using streaming services, so I'm thinking unlimited is the way to go for peace of mind.

KIA, I'm connected to the Upminster Exchange.

Bugger, my order has been delayed until end of the month due to there being "no DSLAM ports available in the BT cabinet". Is this a fairly common thing?
