broadband without a contract

Quite a few, Enta resellers offer 1 month contracts, no traffic shaping, no FUP's, and very generous caps. 
an entanet reseller (ukfsn, adsl24 are 2 -there are plenty more) is certainly your best bet if you need a large allowance every month.
if you're a light/medium user, perhaps look at newnet, idnet or zen. they all do minumum one month contracts also and have good reputations for service and support.
i assume you're migrating away from another isp and have a mac code and hardware? if not, then you'll need to pay connection fees (£47ish) and supply your own hardware (obviously you don't get the freebies when signing up for one month

virgin offer a 1 month broadband adsl, or rather they did 6 months ago go check

BT has as 12 month commitment on activating the line.
it certainly wasn't 12 months last year, only 3 or 6
Plusnet will only give you an account if you also agree to receive their router with the contract. Cancel within 12months and you pay for it, otherwise it's free.
