Broke my PS3!!!!

Well i thought i had,

It all started when i decided to put linux on it.... mistake number one!

followed the instructions got the linux loder to come on but my os disk hadn't finished burning so set the ps3 to boot into other os as instructed and turned the it off..... mistake number two

os disk finished burning, turned on ps3, power on fans spin, black screen... tried to power off with button and it beeped at me and stayed on.

after several resets via the switch on the back i started to panic... oops

took of hard drive cover... nothing in there of help, no little pinhole button to reset at all

noting on the interweb that i could find to help me out.

pressed and held the power button to turn it on on the off chance it would do something..... and it turned back on!!!

have now reformatted hard drive and smashed the linux disk so as not to be tempted again!
 
so you didnt break it at all..... ? it still works lol

i just did something similar tbh , i failed to read that linux wont out put through the composite cable :o
 
I did a similar thing today, I tried to install yellow dog but it gets stuck in a loop after the kboot part and won't work. I knew the hold the power button for 5 seconds trick though so I didn't have a heart attack :p
 
Yeah you have to hold the power button to reset it to default.

I only found out after about an hour of thinking I had killed mine too!
I had it plugged into hdmi on a hdtv back home, then brought it back here on my sd tv and it was outputting nothing as it was still in 1080p mode :rolleyes:
You would have thought it would autodetect displays, wonder how many will be taken back because of that!
 
Mine did the same, im sceptical about linux on ps3's and think it's all a big lie, as I burnt the dvd as instructed and it just wont install.

How far do you get? Mine loads the bootloader and looks fine till it gets to the kboot command then it loops garbled text over and over again :/

I suppose you may have to wait for the updates to come to sort the problem, but then if you think about it most new hardware has its teething problems

Wonder if its anything to do with the euro hardware revison? Shouldnt be as it was only the EE
 
Yeah Sony said they changed a few things in the 1.60 firmware and there will be a guide up soon but the changes seemed to be to make it easier and the thing won't work which is very annoying.
 
It can't be anything to do with European PS3s being different because I installed Yellow Dog Linux 5 on my PS3 last night no problems, aside from it taking an age to install.
 
If you hold the power button down for 5 seconds you should get a double beep. That is how to do a soft reset on the machine :)

I got it downloaded last week was going to wait for my new 120Gb drive to turn up first (didnt cost $179! :D ) before i tried it.
 
I got linux running fine on mine, installed without a hitch too, i did screw it up initially by messing around with a config file but really easy to format and re-install too

P.s. i have had no experiance with linux before this so quite proud of myslef :D

Where did you get your PS3 from? How much and what did you get with it?

Is Linux easy to install on it? Cheers bud.
 
Could someone who has got it working post a little step by step guide, I want to rule out me been an idiot. I suspect the file I've downloaded is corrupted but its filesize is correct, I burnt it slowly as well.
 
Got it from a UK store (competitor so can't mention the name) £490 with mortor storm and resitance

I found a walkthough a website, can't remeber the address though as i'm in work, i just googled it tbh, it was a hell of a lot earier than i thought it was going to be too
 
Got Fedora Core 6 working fine on my PS3, took a whole day to figure it out and 3 hours to actually install the OS but apart from that it works fine. Now time to see if I can find some console emulators which will work on it :)
 
Once Linux has installed do you get an option at the start as to whether you want to run it or does it load straight in?
