Broke my Ubuntu - can't get past the login screen

Hi all

I seem to have broke my ubuntu dapper system. I can get to the logon screen but when i login the screen goes blank and the light on the monitor flashes.

The last thing i can remember doing was some updates/installs of:
build-essential,
linux-headers,
ARCH
debhelper
fakeroot

Any suggestions as to how to put things right?

Can you ssh to the pc?

i am using the PC now from the ubuntu liveCD

check the logs , sounds like a X config problem.

Try pressing Ctrl + Alt + F2 at the login screen, to open a new text console, sign-in and then check your logs for any X-related error messages, as suggested.

Once you get to console, run:
