cant belive this, had windows 7 upgrade disc for 2 months waiting for me to get a good set of ram (which im bidding on now) and then a gpu and cpu(which im also looking at )

went to get the disc which was in my pc desk draw and its broke!!

had a think how it happened and think it got trapped up the back some how (wasn't in box) can only blame my self really.

i got the key on the book but no discs, is there any way i can get the disc as i have the key??? ill be gutted if the only option is to buy it again

I can only think of some illegal ways of obtaining the official disk image, however do they not do replacement disks for like around £10. Phone Microsoft and find out.

You could originally download an ISO demo version. I'm not sure if that's still available.

It might be worth contacting MS for a replacement disc, as long as you can prove you've got the key.

Or borrow someone elses to install from and use your key. Then make an ISO copy of the disc for your backup.

Aha lol same advice at exactly the same time

never thought about the eval / trial route as already suggested however you can also

...get a dell restore disk of ebay cheap that is the same version of w7, if its the same as Vista / XP it will fail to activate and ask for your serial number... at which point type in your serial number...

The only 'legal' way, which doesn't violate Microsoft's EULA, is to contact Microsoft for a replacement disc, which would cost you a little bit. At least you didn't lose the product key.

Download an ISO off of torrents? I can't see how this would be an issue for anyone with an iota of IT-knouse.

I would suggest the OP find a torrent from somewhere reputable [if there is a reputable place to find MS OS torrents!]. Some random Windows ISO could have been messed with.

ok so not the end of the world then

so your saying ive got 3 option, copy a disc, download a torrent, and call ms. well i suppose ms is the most safest way, and a copy of the disc a better option...

would a fresh install disc be any different to my upgrade disc key code?

ive since decided to go 64bit and understood a upgrade disc could atturly install 64bit on a fresh install as ive only got vista 32bit atm

If you have a friend with upgrade media that is your best bet. A Retail disc might work too.

Yes, to install 64-bit you will need to do a clean install.

A W7 disk has all the versions of the o/s on, what determines what version you use is the key

MW

Not entirely true. Yes each disc has all versions from Home to Ultimate, but the disc itself can be set to just one version. I can't find the link [it was posted here a few weeks ago] but basically you can't just use any disc with your key.

In theory it should work, but it was a choice made by MS. If this has since changed or whatever, I would love to be corrected. :)

Also, the Upgrade keys may not work with Retail or OEM media.

You can remove the restriction by nuking ei.cfg (Google it) from the disc. Saves having to keep multiple copies :).

Remember if you do decide to talk to Microsoft, you will need to be prepped to have a photocopy of the invoice that you got when you originally purchased the CD from a retailer

I believe they usually ask you to email them the invoice as proof of purchase

(happend when i lost my vista cd - dont know if its changed with the the release of windows 7 though :/)

Come on, there are tons of perfectly fine ISO's out there... we are not 60-year old internet noobs. It's an enthusiast forum, this sort of stuff should be standard fare.
