hey ppl just wondering if i can get a little help here

so my pc wouldnt come on other day after being on standby , i have now brought it back from the shop which is what i thought was the problem .. dead gfx card,

some questions first , do ati still have problems with 120hz monitors? (2233rz)

iv never had a ati card before which is what would make me stay at nvidia also the 120hz thing

i dont play much games nowerdays and never new games the only ones i sometimes play is ut99 or silkroad(which can get abit busy and frame hungry with to many ppl even on my old 8800gtx)

so im looking for a good card that can run the above still at around the same performance can anyone recommand me something? my budget would be as low as possible and hoping not to go over 80 if i can help it, i think this points towards a 250?

also i would like something with less head if possible.

i thought someone would have replyed by now, was hopeing for some ideas as i was going to try choose one to buy tommorow

I would try and get a used GTX260 to be honest mate, they are great cards for the money and pretty overclockable if you wanted to go that route, otherwise a 250 is basically the same sort of power card as your old 8800GTX :)

120mhz monitor are the new lcd's right?

Oh I was going to say, that ATI dont support that, but, with last months 10.5 drivers, support was delivered.

Nothing to fear with buying ATI.

At the moment, the 5000 series is the series to have, and you get good performance for your money.

The GTX 465, 470 and 480 are all overpriced, too hot and too hungry for the performance they delivered compared to ATI.

You havent told us your screen resolution.

If you need a card now, get a 5850 or a 5870. Personally if you can wait untill the end of the year, I would, becuase the 6000 series is about 4-5 months away.

But I would also take anything any one tells you with a pinch of salt.

Do a little bit of reaserch, to make sure, that any potential issues you areaware of, and dont get any suprises.

thnx for the replys ppl

im running at 1650x1050 0n the samsung 2233rz , 2.4ghz q6600 (can run at 3.3ghz but i dont feel the need..) 2gb ram

i would like one day to try out the 3d glasses so nvidia would prolly be the best route , also something that stays cool as my 8800 did hit 80degrees sometimes , i dont think there is any warrenty it was one of ocuk nobrand ones i think? just the green shell i bought it as part of one of there ultima oc builds 2 years ago so i dont think there would be warrenty but i could be wrong?

i just read the release notes of the 10.5 drivers ati and it said the 120hz problem has been fixed on the 4000/3000 series what about the 5000 series?

what do u think of one of these?

Well, it's a budget card, with a cut down memory interface and cut down cores, won't be as quick as your old 8800GTX.

i dont really want to go the 2nd hand route as the 8800 only lasted 2 years i wouldnt hold my breath how long a already used one would last ;x

As KelticDaz says, its not a great card for the price. Have a look at this review and see how it compares to other cards.

For that kind of money I would strongly suggest going for a GTS 250 or HD 4850. If you really want Nvidia 3D vision, then the GTS 250 is the one to go for. However, ATI are supposed to be releasing their own 3D implementation soon.

Please be aware that running games in 3D slashes the framerates (by up to 50% in some cases), so you will need to turn down many of the graphics options to get modern games running OK with 3D enabled on these level of graphics cards. Obviously for older/less intensive games like the ones you mentioned, you should be fine.

how hot does the gts 250 get compared to the 8800gtx? also can someone pls explain the term "green" on these cards as when i check the gainward site for the card some bandwidth show pritty low 28gb or something instead of the other 56

also last question does anyone know what warrenty is giving with these cards as i dont see any on the descriptions

ok thanks for ur help ppl i ran out of time and it got to 4.20 before anyone could anwer my last questions so i desided just go go for that gainward 1gb 250 green , hope im intime for delivery tommorow

The Gainward green is a good card, it is called green as it uses less power and is cooler than other GTS 250 cards as it is slightly underclocked (it's core clock is 700MHz compared to 738MHz stock, also the memory clock is 1000MHz compared to 1100MHz stock).

In terms of performance, this review shows the 9800GTX+. The 9800GTX+ is the effectively the same card as the GTS 250, and this review shows a fair comparison between a 9800GTX+ and a 8800GTX as well as many other cards.

I had a look at the memory bandwidth of the Gainward GTS 250 Green, everything seems to be normal (memory bandwidth 64GB/s). This make sense considering the slightly lower memory clock. What does the 24gb figure refer to?

quick question will i be able to just plug this in without having to reinstall drivers etc since its still nvidia?
