Broken card mystery

I just wanted to run this past you guys as I have no idea at all about this one. A while back I aquired a Gainward 7950 GT 256MB card from a friend - at the time this was pretty fast and I plugged it in and used it without issue for a few months. It then appeared to die, at the time I suspected my PSU was to blame as it was getting a little long in the tooth, so I went back to using my 7800GT and got it RMA'd.

It came back from RMA untouched, they said it passed all their tests, so I put it down to the PSU. I later got a new Corsair 620W PSU and tried the card again, but it still didn't work, in the same system it had worked fine in for a few months previously. I then stuck it in my HTPC (Gigabyte 939 board, Nvidia chipset of some kind) downstairs for testing, and it worked fine. Weird, but I thought my old board, a DFI NF4 SLI, had just decided it didn't like it.

I have recently upgraded again, with a P5Q-E & E8400 and tried this card again, it still isn't having it, dead as a dodo in my main rig but works a treat in the HTPC.

Obviously I am wanting a new card so I don't plan on running this long term anyway, but I would love to know the cause of this. I also wouldn't mind selling it but I can't stick it on the bay and truthfully say it works.

The only difference I can see is that in the main rig it is in a tower case, so I guess there may be slightly less strain on the card itself compared to in the Antec Fusion downstairs, however I have tried a few times with my case on its side and it's the same.

Any ideas?

this is a strange one, could it be that the case is preventing it from sitting correctly in the slot? maybe when you first installed it you got it in tight but it has slowly slipped out over time to the point when it appeared dead? the only thing i can suggest is to push it in as firmly as you can and then try it

Thanks for replying - that had crossed my mind, but I have had the whole lot out of the case and re-seated it multiple times to no avail.

Use harsh language at it, seems to make me work when wor lass does :D

Does this card have a molex power socket? I had some issues with a 7300GT, had to have it on a rail with nothing else attached to it, sounds daft I know but it was the only way I could get it to graft?

Hehe, as you do :)

Sorry Dan, gettin` confused here as I had 2 7300GTs, one was an agp (which required the molex) and the other was a PCIx (which didn`t obviously). Was a while back and I ain`t gettin` any younger, got the Altz ya see ;)

The former is still goin` strong in a rig I built for me Dad from leftovers ... could be 4 or 5 year old now?
