Hi All,

Im hoping someone could help!.

I have just 'semi broken down' if there is such a term.

I cannot find 1st or 2nd Gear, i can however get 3rd,4th and 5th and reverse.

I think its to do with the Gear Linkage?, is this correct?

My car is an old Pug (Puegeuot 206, T reg)

Also does anyone know if this would be an expensive repair?

Please help!

Thanks

Compared to the value of the car - probably, especially if you've got a lot of labour charges. I wouldn't have an idea of realistic numbers though, maybe someone else will.

If you're not capable of diagnosing it yourself, you're going to have to visit a garage at some point - find a good one and get a quote?

I cant drive it to the garage so presumabley they will come out and fix it? or will i have to pay someone to tow it away?

The car is worth next to nothing, its really a banger its just something to get me by for now (to work and back) while i save some cash for a decent motor.

The gear linkage - they have a nasty plastic clip that holds the rod (ball & socket affair)in place and that shears through making the gearstick wobbly and you normally lose anything between one and three gears.

The new one are metal if my memory is correct, it shouldn't be that expensive to have done.

The last one I did a few a years ago, I charged £70 for the part & my labour.

Also check the nylon bush in the linkage on the gear box selector, that can wear.

Its next to impossible, it just stalls not enough revs i guess.

The only way i could pull off in 3rd would be if someone pushed the car down a hill.

It should be doable, just feed in the clutch very slowly while keeping the revs up. I've pulled my old 1.1 106 away in 4th before, not quick by any description, but it'll get you to the garage.

my car is a 1.1 206, 8 valve, T reg (1999) has done 107,000 and is on its last legs (recently had a service and found there was no oil and no coolant, guess that explained the high temperatures)

Ill give it ago tomorrow morning (fingers crossed it will work)

But for now luckily my mum will be giving me a lift into work tomorrow (either that or sickie it)

Hill start in 3rd gear on a 1.1 206?

Hope you don't have to stop on any hills. Best ask a few friends to follow to give a push if needed.

I drove a BMW 320 from Swansea to Brynamman (18ish miles including city centre traffic) with only 5th gear so I'm pretty sure with some delicate clutch work and some revs that you can manage without first or second to get it to the garage.

Fault is almost certainly gear selector and/or linkage.

Pull out in 3d?

I don't know what it was about the gearbox that meant me and it didn't get along (well other than me being ham-fisted) but I used to regularly find 3rd when aiming for 1st back in my Saxo VTR. Never caused a problem though, quick reactions with revs and clutch meant I never stalled it though and just pulled out less speedy than I otherwise would have.

just reverse it to the garage in the dead of night when no one else is on the road.

edit: gah, beaten to it.
