Broken GFX card possibly?

Hi,

I'm running a 6300 Core Duo, Gigabyte DS3 and Geil 6400 mem.
All running nicely alongside my older Geforece 6800GTX card.

Suddenly the screen goes to 'Power Save' when I attempt to load World of Warcraft, just as the logon screen is about to appear (never quite saw the screen)

The PC will boot up (beep/Disk activity), but the screen will not display anything now. If I disconnect the DVI cable the screen shows 'DVI not found' and the fan on the GFX is spinning as it normally would. If I plug the DVI cable back into the GFX card the screen flashes, but then back to 'power save'

Same problems after trying an old motherboard. I've not got access to other hardware so I'd like to know if this is normal for a dead GFX card, or should I be looking at the CPU/Memory. I'm not sure why or how they would cause this, but I'd like to be sure before I splash out.

Edit. I've tried another monitor too

Not knowing gigabyte boards myself , does the ds3 have any self diagnosis lights or perhaps an small LCD on board for fault codes ?

EDIT : oh also , is it just beeping once like a normal boot up ?

Hmm I must say it doesnt sound too promising for that card , can you borrow a card from a friend or another PC ?
Have you done the usual like reseating the card and checking all connections thoroughly ?

I've tried reseating the card. I'm all up for buying a new card, but worried that the card may be okay and the problem could be caused by the CPU maybe.

Unfortunetly my friends are all still using AGP so nobody can help me out on that level.

I guess I started this thread as I wanted confirmation (from OCUK members) that the card is broken, maybe from a similiar fault you've experienced. Are there any readers who can advise that a CPU can cause these problems, as buying a new GFX card is the direction I'm headed for, but I'm just a little panicky about getting a new card and then getting the same problems.

Otherwise, borked CPU/ mem would normally produce a whole load of beeps. As far as I can tell from your post, its running normally, just no display whatsoever. This suggests that the GFX has gone pear shaped- Pull it and try booting, and the machine should beep at you. If it doesn't do this, sounds like you've either got a very non-standard mobo (Yeah, I know- Can't be bothered to go ferreting for the tech docs) or the mobo has gone.

Possibly a PSU issue? Can you borrow someone elses to check?

I couldn't get a signal from my X1950Pro it would send the monitor into powersave like you have said, only it did this right from the go and I had no display at all.

Changed the PSU and it worked fine..

Just a quick bump to say that my PC is working as it should now. The problem was the GFX card and nothing else. Once replaced all is how it should be.

Thought I'd post this for other 'problem searchers', as there is nothing worse that reading upon a members problem but not finding out how/if they fixed it.
