Got myself a Zotac Amp GTX280 a couple of weeks ago second hand. Worked absolutely fine. Needed to take the card back out of the pc. I shut the pc down but forgot to switch the power off to the motherboard before removing the card. Now it doesn't work at all. So I'm after some advice on what damage I'm likely to have done to the card and whether it's repairable, or have I got a £200+ doorstop/paperweight? Thanks

Have you checked its properly seated and you remembered to connect the power leads back upwhen you put it back in?

Does your mobo have a 2nd PCI-E slot you could try? I doubt youve killed it tho, if youve killed anything its more likley to be the mobo.

Yes, it's been properly seated and plugged in correctly and has plenty of power to it. Motherboard did protest a bit after I'd put another card in but appears to be fine now. A red led came on also on the GTX280 after I'd put it back in that hadn't been on beforehand. Don't think that's a good sign.

I'm using another card currently so my pc works fine. Wasn't able to try the card in a friend's pc as their PSU didn't have the necessary power connectors. Pretty sure the card is broken/faulty, I'm just trying to establish what damage I've likely done to it by pulling it from the motherboard with the power still on. Guess I'll just have to see if there's anywhere close by that deals with this sort of thing.

Yes Redlight does mean it has not had enough power.

I had the zotac amp and mine blew... OCUK replaced though, many thanks lads, although i had to have refund as its not in prod anymore... Zotac do 5 year warranty on those.. did the original owner register it?

I think thye clocked the amp too high originally.

No, the previous owner didn't have the receipt, or warranty for it. Have tried the card again. Realised I'd plugged a different 6pin power connector into the card, one that was part of a molex to 6pin adapter. Thought that was the problem but upon plugging the two PSU's 6pin power leads (with 8pin adapter) in I'm still getting the red light, so maybe my PSU is faulty. I remember seeing a small spark from it a few days ago when I fired the PC up. That it then? Any way of checking if a rail has gone, or is it RMA time for the PSU? Thanks for the helpful advice folks!

If it were me I would use a multimeter to check the voltages on each of the pins on each connector going to the GFX card..

If you are not familiar with using one I would suggest you just borrow another power supply of similar wattage and see if it works.

If you took the card out while the motherboard was still powered, it might've messed up the VGA bios, it happened to me with a 6800GT once, reflashing it using a PCI card got it working just fine again.

Thanks for the advice. I'll try testing the PSU with a multimeter first. Hopefully that's the problem as it's still under warranty.

I've tested my PSU's 6pin connectors and they are both putting out 12.2v. Is that enough to say my PSU is fine?

I assume you checked all the yellow wired pins ( not 100% certain but they should all
be a 12V feeds to the card)

The black would be the 0V line

If they are all ok then looks like you have blown the card and have made a real nice paper weight out of it.

That's surprising, I never switch off at the PSU...hundreds of times...you sure it's that?

Try this.

1). Disconnect all non-essential peripherals from your motherboard. You only really need the CP, Ram, PSU and Graphics card.
2). Reset Mobo bios via jumper/switch (dependent on mobo).
3). Power on and cross your fingers.

Yeah, all yellow wired pins measured at 12v. Ah well, least I know now.

Can't see what else it could have been hernaldo. Took it out once, put it back in, doesn't work now. Don't think I need to try that 555BUK. Everything else works fine, I'm using an awesome 7300GS in the PC currently. Will probably get a GTX275 then. Cheers for the help and suggestions guys.
