broken internal laptop sound card - USB solution?

Hi, I got a compaq v6500 laptop, the internal soundcard/device is broken, would an external USB sound card give me sound back?

I tried new internal speakers and headphones already.
task manager says the device is not working correctly, i also tried a new windows install along with reinstalling drivers

You could get a USB sound card, but that will only work for headphones or any external speakers connected. It won't work for the laptops internal speakers.

so a USB sound card + external speaker/headphones will work?
also will you have any ideas which sound card (as cheap as possible) to get or will any of the ones under the USB sound card section work?
