Hi,

Back in March I bought a Jeep Cherokee, it's pretty old (2006) but it was running pretty well.

Last night I was driving back from the gym and I noticed the temperature needle was 3/4 of the way over to the right which seemed off, I pulled over - opened the hood and a cloud of steam came out, hissing sound and coolant all over the engine bay.

The RAC guy had a quick look, and it looks as though a stone has been flicked up into the radiator fan - which has then catapulted directly into the radiator causing damage.

The problem is - there's supposed to be a plastic cover that goes underneath the engine, however it's missing - as a result the warranty company won't cover it, because it's damage rather than mechanical failure... my question is - should the garage I bought it from not cover this? it's less than six months since I purchased it..

Curious to know people's thoughts (for those who even care :p )

A stone puncturing the radiator is hardly the sellers fault, I would not expect them to cough up for this.

Just buy a new rad and move on would be my advice.

I doubt it will be covered under any warranty as it is physical damage that has caused it not a mechanical defect.

I doubt a missing under-tray would cause damage unless you were reversing but if you are that worried buy a new tray when you get the replacement radiator.

It's a 10 year old car, lots and lots of cars don't have their undertrays fitted as they are easy to break and can make servicing a right pain so many are left off on purpose.

Just buy a new radiator and move on
