The camera will start up fine, but it is unable to focus at all. What could be causing this? Is it a firmware problem, or is a trip to the repair shop going to be necessary?

i have had 3 ricoh camera and all have broke. ok the first i had i treated quite bad (was travelling around japan), then i bought the same model (2nd hand, while in japan) and the lens kept jamming and it stopped focusing after a year or so. This happened the 1st week into a year trip in Australia so i had to buy another camera i went for the Capilo R40 (the funny thing was the Ricoh Rep was in the shop at the time so i mentioned that their cameras kept breaking, she said dont keep it in your pocket as the heat and pressure can break them easy) so i was careful with my new R40, but 6 months later it has trouble focusing when i zoom out and the lens jams again sometimes, so i will go back to the shop before i fly out of Aus to see if they will swap it.... hope they will as i have a 1 year warranty.
cant help fix your problem but maybe it is a problem with ricoh cameras. it's a shame as i like the wide angle and fast picture taking.
