Broken router, time for a new one

Hello everyone,

I was awoken this morning by shouts that the internet isnt working. After 30 mmaybe s on the phone to sky it has been determined the router is at fault. They want 37.50 for new router to be delivered. It is a 2008 Netgear b/g router, ADSL.

The problem is that we are moving in 2 weeks and will be getting fibre optic, so it seems pointless to me to buy an ADSL router only for it to not be used later. I see there are a few options:

Buy a cheap ADSL router for the two weeks left here and use the Super hub we get when we move. (maybe use it as an AP once we move)

Buy a router that does ADSL/fibre optic router (do these even exist)

Make a Linux based router (the manly option)

Any other ideas or recommendations?

Cheers. :)

Edit: Just noticed that sky get a bit funny about using other routers, and don't want to supply ADSL passwords. Is thus going to be a major problem?

Is the router REALLY at fault? what is the problem? I never believe Sky India tech support, unless it is the UK based chaps as some of them know their stuff.

If it was me I would just buy a cheap ADSL modem/router to get you through the last 2 weeks.

As for the comment re Sky ADSL usernames/passwords, there is a handy online tool to help you 'extract' this information from your current router. I use my own Netgear DG834GT (syncs 2.5mb higher!) over the worthless piece of crap that Sky provided me with.

It was the English support, they seemed to know their stuff. I was thinking about getting a cheap ADSL modem and connecting it to my router, as you said.

Thanks for your help, I shall use that tool later. :)

Wouldn't know, they don't give out the new stuff to existing customers now do they? No one does! :p

I think I remember seeing a thread on a new Sky router but it looked like a brick.
