Broken toe or something less severe?

I mentioned this on the covid thread, yesterday I banged my small toe against the metal leg of a stool.

The symptoms yesterday were lots of pain for the first 30 minutes or so which eased off but didnt go away. If I tried to use my toe against pressure such as my finger I had a sharp pain on the outside of it. I was able to walk around probably not normal but could walk.

When I went bed there was immediate relief probably due to the foot been raised, and by the time I woke up I wondered if my toe had mostly healed the pain was so low.

When I stood up after getting out of bed there was a clear increase in pain however throughout the whole day the pain hasnt reached the levels of yesterday, I can move my toe away from the other toes without much pain now. There is still bruises and the base of the toe still feels too low, although without the top of it looking too low so might be down to swelling.

The problem today has been I can no longer walk around without a struggle and if I try to just stand up every 2-3 seconds there is a kind of spasm with the small toe as if it cannot handle the slight contact with floor so I have to react, usually lifting my leg and leaning on something (or sitting down). It has progressively got more severe during the day to the point now I am struggling to stand up and even take a couple of steps. I probably need a toe buddy I guess, and to stop trying to move around, but if any of you guys have ever had a broken or fractured toe, do my symptoms seem too severe for a fracture? The toe from what I can see has no bone sticking out, looks normal to the eye in regards to where its pointing, and no blood under nail or pain under nail although nail is cracked at the top.

I got no idea at the moment how I would get to a hospital for an xray without an ambulance I think would really struggle to get to a car and get inside it. Not keen on going as seems a waste of time unless its a full on break from what I read on the NHS website.

You have my sympathies, I’ve broken numerous toes during my younger years, mainly as a result of sports but also on a couple of occasions through drunken shenanigans - riding a bike in just your boxer shorts at 2am is not a good idea! So I know your pain.

that said, you need to speak with a doctor for proper medical diagnosis. I doubt this thread will remain open as it’s pretty much a medical advice thread if you haven’t had a diagnosis. Please do not use an ambulance to go for an X-ray. Is there no one can drive you to a&e??

I'm a podiatrist and I'd be happy to give you some advice, but I'm pretty sure I'd lose my forum privileges if I did.

No medical advice

We ask all members not to ask for, nor give out, medical advice. This is because if a member of these forums gave out medical advice that was incorrect, the owner of OcUK forums could be held responsible.

Please go see a doctor or the miner injuries clinic, if you can't drive can you ask a friend for a lift, or get a taxi (if need be ask to sit in the front or for a higher vehicle so you have more leg room).
The longer you leave it the harder it will be for anything to be done if it is needed.

As I said in my post in reply to yours yesterday, when I did mine I was silly and didn't go for about a week when i should have gone the same day/next morning.
