Broken x1950pro?

Hello.

I recently purchased a x1950 pro from ebay. The item was second hand but the user had a perfect rating so it seemed like a safe deal

Anyway, when i tried installing xp with this card in it got as far as the device detection part then the screen went black (lost video signal) and the x1950 fan started going really fast.

I then installed xp using my old gfx card. Once xp was installed i switched cards and managed to get into windows. Installed ATI drivers and after rebooting i had the same problem.

Now my PSU was my frist thought but its 500w. Then after making a post about this on another forum i was told i need a certain amount of amps going to 12v, 30 is recommended. My PSU only has 18 amps.

Is my card broken or do i need a new PSU?

Ok, well i will buy a new PSU and see if that helps but i am really worried that i got sent a dud here. When i first bought my 6600GT i had to get a new PSU for it to work but i never had any issues like im getting with my x1950, it would simply tell me in windows that there was not enough power going to the card.

Does anyone else know about this problem? Does the video usually cut out and the fan speed up if it's a power issue?

Thank you.

I have a 1950Pro (AGP) and with my Tagen 380W PSU it would just about boot into windows then the screen would just blank (at ramdom, within 10 seconds of Windows desktop appearing), similar to what you are experiencing.

When I put in my old Enermax 565W PSU all was fine and been working fine ever since.

These card require a decent branded quality 500W+ PSU it seems

Diddy

I had similar prob with old rig, was my Q-Tech 650W PSU which had weak rails and poor ampage, sorted prob with getting my current PSU as in my sig, probs went away instantly

I have to say I had the same problem when I bought my 1950pro, at the time I had a 450watt seasonic powersupply I think and the card was showing similar problems to you. I upgraded powersupply to a 600watt and it worked perfectly.

Thank you very much for your replies everyone, that has taken a lot off my mind now that i can almost be sure there is nothing wrong with my card. Just gotta fork out for a new PSU now :|

Thanks for your help :)

Well thanks for pointing out a PSU for me but i don't think i'll be buying that. It costs £20 more than the x1950 i bought!

Any other, cheaper options available? Iv'e had a browse through but they dont seem to list how many amps are available to 12v so im a bit lost.

Yes i did plug the power in :P

Anyway, everything is up and running now :) A friend of mine luckily had a power supply with a dual 12v rail that he kindly offered to me since he never really uses his PC. The card is working like a charm now.

Thank you for your advice everyone :)
