Afternoon all

Not sure how to or what's gone on here to be honest.

I was playing Counter strike this morning fine surfing was fine also.

Then i went on to argos link and it couldn't find it ( the window you get when it can't find the link)

I checked the router thats fine , so i rebooted and it was still the same .
I tried another reboot of another drive that i use sometimes and that seemed the same too?

The strange thing is when i login to ftp servers it works fine and the same when using newsgroups?

I don't know whats wrong or how to solve this nothing looks wrong other than IE won't connect to the internet? And it also won't connect to my router as well via IE which i found odd?

I'm on win xp

Hence the reason i'm on works computer to post this.

Thanks..

DNS problem?
Try pinging from your command prompt yahoo.com or similar.
Do you get a reply?
If you dont get a reply then its probably DNS and may be worth a call to ISP to check. If not DNS then I would check with ISP as I have encountered problems before and the ISP has been aware.
Do you have another machine you can test on?

Yeah i did a ping to bbc.co.uk and mtv.com and it couldn't connect at all.

But why does it connect to ftp ok?

Don't have another machine to test but i do have duel boots and both of them aren't working with IE but ok with FTP.

I've ran virus scans and there fine .

Just seems wired one min it was working next it wasn't ?

have you checked your hosts file - maybe shenanigans in it

I hadn't logged into to the server until then to test it and things seemed fine?

files up to date etc..

I just don't get why all of a sudden it went down?

thats beacuse your probley using a IP address to connect to the ftp and newsgroup sites and therefore you don't have the unable to reslove the name issue.

this is quite a common problem. You could check the host file as this does act as a sort od loacl dns server (inh that you have to enter the ip address and name so it remembers it)

the host file is located in c:\windows\system32\drivers\ect\ folder

I'd try adding a 2nd dns server on your router from your ISP. Thier website will have more details.

dmpoole'd idea of flushing and renewing the dns in ipconfig, won't work if your isp dns sever is down. (hense why your in this problem in the first place)

let us know how you get on.

Well i'm sorted out at last!

It seems my Dns was down so i've swapped it around and using OpenDNS now and it works a treat.

Thanks for all your help and advice :)
