Sons been complaining about the home PC, 1 in my sig.

Browse the drives C:, D:, E: or F: and it'll stop showing the contents in the right hand pane, the green bar at the top will progress as though it's doing a scan and then all i get is the round whirly cursor and PC is totally unresponsive.

It's not completely dead as if you click around it will eventually process the click and pressing the power button will eventually display a black screen showing you what's running and are you sure you want to shutdown.

I've scanned the hard drives, checked system stability by running Prime for a few hours, nothing in the event log either.

Anybody seen this before and more importantly know how to fix it?

Is there any pattern to what folders you are browsing, I've seen a similar issue where it was only folders that contained video... I think it was something to do with power DVD or something that caused it to lock up when trying to generate the thumbnails.

I can't quite remember the specifics though.

I think and have to emphasise the think it was down to eset. Turned off the scan all files settings within Threatsense and the lock ups stopped. Had to change this option in quite few places so decided to de-install and re-install Eset with Threatsense disabled, will do some further testing tomorrow as my sons using the PC at the mo.

Well disabling Threatsense has definitely stopped the lockups and there are some entries in Event log related to Eset ekrn.exe having certain registry keys locked when Windows tries to access them, the registry keys are all related to the user including the top level HKCU for the user, no wonder Windows couldn't do anything except wait around.
