Going to the Theatre in Birmingham at the weekend and will fancy a curry afterwards. Any Birmingham types here who could recommend somewhere good nearby?
Etihaas (sp?) near St Pauls Square is very good for a decent curry, though it is more of a 'fancy' curry. I'd recommend it if you're staying in the city center
If you're at the Hippodrome and want to eat a little closer, there's a place literally a 10 second walk away called Maharaja's which was good the few times I've been there, though is a little cramped at times.
Just been on the phone to mate who lived over there and he suggested Ladypoole Road? No place in particular, but he says they're all good around there.
Ladypool Road isn't a bad shout per se, it's a little rough around the edges though there are some reasonable places to eat - it falls under the 'Balti Triangle' so you won't get the overly fancy dishes, but you will get a good traditional curry
It's a short taxi ride out of town, though I probably wouldn't walk around the immediate area too much. Heck, I live in Birmingham and I wouldn't even walk around the area lol. There's a place called 'Plaza' which is good, I've been there on a few occasions and I've always been quite happy with the food there. It's a traditional curry house so there's not much in the way of atmosphere - as you'd find in the city center restaurants. There's also a few 'dessert' bars that have opened up there so you can always get a decent dessert afterwards.
If you're open to going to Ladypool Road, I'd certainly have a look at Mughal-E-Azaam on Stratford Road (literally runs parallel to Ladypool Road). I've not personally been there but a lot of friends who've been there have highly recommended it. It's an old Church that's been converted into a restaurant and looks rather nice from photo's and so on.
Quick bump. Have an idea where we're going to eat.
But would also like to know of any decent bars in the city centre? We'll want somewhere chilled where we could possibly sit and enjoy some nice drinks. We don't want anywhere full-on or rammed with binge drinkers.
I went here a couple of weeks ago - http://www.sanskritrestaurant.co.uk/. It was a "proper" curry, much more like you'd get in India than the city centre curry houses, and absolutely fantastic.
For drinks, have a look at Utopia (it's not a rave no matter how much it sounds like one!) or Primitivo.
