ADMIN/MODS, PLEASE MOVE THIS TO THE BEST PLACE FOR MOST ATTENTION IF THIS ISNT THE CORRECT SECTION ALREADY, I DONT SEE ANY OTHER SECTION APART FROM HERE TO POST THIS AS MY PC IS OVERCLOCKED AND NOW WITH A BSOD ERROR TOO, ITS OVERCLOCKED TOO THAT IS WHY I THOUGHT THIS WAS POSSIBLY THE BEST SECTION TO POST IT, BUT IF I AM WRONG, PLEASE FORGIVE ME AND JUST MOVE IT TO THE PLACE IT SHOULD BE, (apart from the bin, lol) thanks :)

Noticed out of the blue couple of times past few days the PC has just kinda froze once or twice (I use the PC average 10 hours per day everyday), didnt show classic blue screen as such, just froze and screen went black, but the PC actually stayed powered up as I could hear it easily and see the led's on the front etc.

Instantly I jumped to my old thoughts straight away that the PSU is probably on its way out, but I tried Furmark on a 15 minute test and intel burn test on max settings test and the system didnt crash or anything (touch wood for luck, lol), I had heard that using those programs should show a problem with the psu if there is one, I have used them before, so I know what they are etc, but I used to just use them for checking my overclock and graphics card etc, but 'seemingly' they can see if a PSU would be ok too, I.E - I guess cause a system crash ?

Anyways, after trying those programs and nothing happened I have decided to post up the details of one of the error reports, I had to post 2 pic's as it doesnt all fit into 1.

Anyone any ideas at all please ?

P.S, I know this is the overclocking section and as my system is clocked then I could only see this as being the best place for this, if not then please Admin/mod just move it to the correct place, thanks.

(please see error attachments).

ohh, meant to say, while running FURMARK ON,

the PSU THE +12V levelled @ 12.096v and sits solid at that.

THE +5v levelled 5.080v sits solid at that.

FUR OFF:

+12V = 12.192V sits solid at that.
+5V = 5.120V sits solid at that.

(I mention those psu voltages as I seen on a few websites that those are the ones to keep an eye on if you don't have actual electronic testing equipment which I don't have and don't intend buying either)

I didn't check the voltages when using intel burn test as I just waited to see if it survived a maximum setting test which as I said it did several times (touch wood again for luck, lol).

PSU is a coolermaster, several years old now but it was and probably still is a top of range model under a different model number now, I don't have a note of the model number but I know for a fact its a coolermaster and 1000watt and its been easily powering my spec system now for a good few year, I hardly ever do anything that stresses the PC at all like even game etc, used to play fifa, don't even play that now, maybe watch HD movies, that's about it, I think my system spec should show in my details, thanks again.

what operating system are you using?

EDIT : checked google and it seems 116 is a graphics card driver issue. OR a windows not being updated issue.

Update both :)

thanks mate, but already updated the graphics driver to most recent (not the beta version) and windows too same as always, so I guess thats maybe not the answer :(

Think I said earlier I used FUR test to check the graphics and system seemingly it will also find a problem in the PSU too i guess if its drawing power from it like I said earlier too, also ran intel burn test on max settings which is overkill for any testing and that even flew the test no problems at all (touch wood for luck again, lol).

So really, I am still none the wiser, hmmmm, thanks though mate, any help or comment is always appreciated mate :)

its windows 7 x64 by the way as ya asked mate ;)

:( this situation got really really bad last night and basically ruined my whole night and all the way through the early hours of the morning too :(

As @harry5522 said "sounds like a graphics card or possibly a graphics driver or windows update problem" (maybe, maybe not).

But, like I replied, I had already tried and done all that.

So my thoughts on this were always at worst some sort of 'MAJOR' fault like the motherboard, Graphics Card (as mentioned) OR the PSU, as lots of people know, problems very similar to what I described are generally a PSU on its way out (lots of times), but without having any physical electronic testing equipment its pretty hard to say as you know.

So I went with what harry5522 said and had a real good look all over the internet for the "error code 116" and I read loads and loads of stuff on it and noticed LOADS AND LOADS of people with that same problem and error code all over the internet.

The strange thing about this 'issue' is it doesn't act like a typical "blue screen of death error/crash" where the computer crashes and you get a blue screen and error code (especially if you don't have a stable "overclock") ((My overclock of 4.5 is stable, well It always used to be and I think still is after the tests I done using Intel burn test on "max" settings and furmark too even with this error happening when I could get a chance, temps all low and tests stable etc)).

Its strange, it acts like myself and lots of others describe, the computer screen just goes 'blank/black' (not blue 'BSD') and the computer appears to keep running (I think 'possibly'), you can see the computer LED's and hear the fans going etc just like the computer is on/running but just with a black screen, you know what I mean ??? (whether its actually still fully running or not is a different story, I have no idea as I didn't keep or look at the error reports etc, but anyway, as I say, it just kind of sits there with a black screen and the computers seems to still be running possibly, I do not know).

Anyway, my thoughts remained with all the things I thought, motherboard, graphics card, PSU (needing replaced possibly at worst), I even thought about a bad virus too etc but thought that it would have seemed a bit unlikely but anything's possible as we all know.

Ok, I will cut to the chase, LOL, this was doing my head right in and in the end I thought 'OK OK', lets try a radical tactic, which was a "Full new clean wipe/format and new install of windows" as I had seen that a lot of others on the internet had to also resort to this, its simple and quick to reinstall windows as we all know but its a pain in the neck (system restore was tried and didn't have any effect by the way), if we don't have all the latest drivers for every single thing that then can take HOURS AND HOURS finding them all on the internet and downloading and installing them and having to fully update windows too as well as reinstall all your programs etc, that's what takes forever as we all know.

'Overclock', What I can say about "a stable overclock" is that out of the dozens and dozens of times this fault/error kicked in and was causing this issue and gradually getting worse until it got to the extent last night the PC was hardly useable, only "one time" I was lucky enough to notice the usual words/text saying "your pc recovered from a blah blah blah" (or whatever it says, (the usual stuff) and as I say, last night I just happened to catch a quick glimpse of words saying something like "YOUR OVERCLOCK DIDNT WORK" (or something like that), so then I thought hmmmmm, strange strange strange indeed.

Even when the PC was running inbetween this issue causing problems, intel burn test on max settings and Furmark would not crash my PC, I kept trying them, but nope, they wouldn't crash the machine and we all know those pretty much heavy duty stress all parts of any PC right out, so that's what made it even stranger to me.

Anyway, to finish this, before I done the fresh clean/wipe/format of windows as mentioned, I quickly nipped into my BIOS and for the sake of it I dropped my overclock DOWN from 4.5 to 4.2 even though everything was basically telling me that's not required, I just done it anyway because really, at the end of the day apart from seeing those nice high figures saying your nice overclock figures with your cool tempreatures, dropping approx 300MHz means nothing at all really, not for me anyway as I am not really a heavy gamer or anything, I am just like a lot of people that just like to see the nice overclocked figures at the end of the day, know what I mean ?? lol.

So on top of the fresh clean windows install etc I dropped the overclock to 4.2ghz as I say, and then I had to go to bed as I was so tired by that time @7am, lol.

So this is me now sitting here again with the computer going and touch wood for luck, it hasn't showed the issue again 'YET', lol.

So really, I don't know what might happen and I also wanted to tell everyone what I have been through too, it may or may not help someone else in future and its always good to read other peoples experiences etc as we all know.

If anyone would like to comment, please yes, do so :)

Does anyone think I should leave things as they are with the overclock or do you think I should bump it back up to 4.5 again for example etc ?

Thanks for reading :)

Ok, I need help, arggggggggg :( :( :( it just crashed/froze AGAIN MAN, exactly the same as before :(, I thought it would be ok too :(

I have a copy of the report files you guys would maybe like to see/need to see if that helps ? (I cant attach the files in here though :( )

I believe they are the minidump file which is a .dmp file (070515-9625-01.dmp), I also have a .sysdata.xml file which might be something useful, I don't know,(WER-10483-0.sysdata) ?

I can open the .sysdata one and could copy and paste all the mumbo jumbo info in here, but as for the .dmp file, no way I can find that opens that :( I have them saved here though for you if someone says they would be good to see ?

ok, found a program that opens the minidump .dmp file and this is what it says :

Ok guys, sorry, I put the massive minidump posts etc into spoilers, I didn't know how to do that until now, but now I know, thanks :)

Ok, thanks guys, I read your posts and soaked in what you all said etc, thanks.

@PieEater, about my main CPU bios overclock as you mentioned, its been stable for a few years and nothing has changed, I think I already mentioned I tried 'lowering' the CPU bios overclock somewhat just to make sure that it wasn't causing the problem, but the fault error still happened with the overclock lowered or kept at up at what I already had it set at, and as I said, it fly's through Intel Burn test on MAX settings and Furmark tests too and the temps are all nice and cool for everything etc, so from that I can only assume that its not the CPU overclock.

@kaku , my system spec should show in my signature mate, does it not show ?
plus I am thinking along the same lines as yourself too.

@ Kelt , yes I know mate, only reason why done mega tests on the machine using intel burn test on MAX settings and also Furmark too was just to see if I could get it to crash, but I couldn't as I said, plus being honest, I don't use these things hardly ever at all unless I was checking an overclock, apart from that never, I know they are extreme and way above the level of testing required etc, but still, I am guilty as charged, lol.

OK, this is where I am at with this now, I unplugged the power cables from my graphics card "AMD HD 6990" ( graphics card isnt/wasnt overclocked or even the clock switch flicked or anything) and by pulling the power cables out that way the motherboard allowed me to use the onboard motherboard built in Intel HD 4000 Graphics, I thought I might have needed to pull the card right out but after pulling the power cables the onboard graphics then worked (saved me having to pull the card right out which was handy I guess).

So now basically I am sitting using it like this for now and hoping/waiting that I don't see this issue/error/fault happen again, but I am not holding my breath, hmmm...... (could still be something else).

I guess that this isn't really 100% proving anything with the PSU or graphics card (or is it ?) because I have unplugged the main power cables from the Graphics card and therefore stopped the PSU from being under load, even if the fault doesn't happen while using the machine like this for a day or two in theory that could still mean that it could be the PSU or the Graphics card that is faulty, couldn't it ???? I am scratching my head here, hmmmm

ohh, meant to say, last night I also tried several versions of the official drivers for that card from older ones to the latest one and it was all done proper as always by using driver sweeper in safe mode etc etc etc, but that didn't solve a thing either.

Any other thoughts on this subject from anyone would be extremely very much appreciated thanks :)

Thanks "PieEater" or anyone else that would like to comment on this please ?

Ok, this is where I am at just now.

As I mentioned two posts back, I unplugged the power cables from my main graphics card (AMD HD 6990) (I thought I might have had to actually pull the main card out of its slot but seemingly not), anyway, that then allowed me to use the motherboards onboard graphics which is the Intel 4000 HD chip.

Anyway, as said, I have now been sitting for approx nearly exactly two full days just using the onboard graphics etc and touch wood for luck its not crashed/froze or anything like what was previously mentioned in great detail in all my posts on this thread.

I have managed to find a friend that has an old graphics card and PSU, but whether or not the PSU would have enough power for the AMD 6990 is another story and I don't know the type of port or anything the other graphics card will plug into either, not seen them yet and my mate has still yet to go get them from his loft/attic and he cant remember what they are either, so I am hoping for the best here.

But I guess at this point, realistically what I have done and the way I am sitting just now does not prove a single thing, or does it ?, what I mean is, have I proved its not a problem with the PSU or motherboard for example ?

Whats anyones thoughts ? For example, what would you guys now try or do first or should I just run it like this maybe until after the weekend just to make sure everything is still ok, touch wood again for luck ?

p.s, I bumped the overclock back up to 4.5 again as it wouldn't crash on tests and temps are very cool etc as also mentioned previously too.

You've proven that the problem lays with your graphics card, and have highlighted the following possibilities;

1) Your graphics card has developed a fault.
2) Your PSU has developed a fault and is no longer able to provide the required power to your 6990.
3) Your motherboard has developed a fault on the PCI-E subsystem.

You now need to prove which of these 3 is the issue. I very much doubt that it is a motherboard fault as it is a very specific issue but there are a couple of things that you could try with your board. Upgrading your BIOS and / or resetting the CMOS would be worthwhile as would trying a different PCI-E slot on your board. I have the Pro version of your board and had some issues which were resolved with resetting the CMOS so it is not unheard of for the BIOS to become corrupt especially when overclocking.

I'm not sure how viable testing your rig with stuff hat's been knocking around in your mates loft for years will be. Would he be amenable to installing and testing your graphics card in his rig (assuming he has a decent enough PSU)?

/Edit: Please don't take offence but I honestly think you might get more help if you kept your posts shorter and to the point. You're probably trying to help but you're burying the important detail in a lot of repeated and irrelevant information which makes helping you a lot harder than it needs to be.

Ok mate, thank you.

I got that stuff off my mate, he dropped it off today before I seen your post which I see now.

Anyway, here is the long and short of it so to speak, right now I am using my onboard graphics as I said (Intel HD 4000).

He gave me the complete system he had, but its much older than my system is obviously.

The Graphics card is an NVIDIA GEFORCE 8800 GTS 320MB GDDR3, yes, I think its fair to say its quite old, (BUT), I guess One Big question would be, would it still be much better to use this old card rather than the Intel HD 4000 onboard Graphics, that's the main question on this part I guess ? P.S, (it only requires 1 x 6 pin connector to power it)

(I could show photos of the graphics card but I don't want to in case its not allowed as overclockers who obviously sell stuff as we all know, but I can if its ok ?, I could also post links to it on other sites too but for same reason I don't want to get into trouble, lol ?).

The PSU is a Thermaltake Toughpower 700Watt, so I really don't know if that would even start my own system and with the AMD 6990 in it, know what I mean ? The 6990 is a juice guzzler.....but hey, I dunno  ?

I will include a couple of Specification photos I found for both the onboard Intel HD 4000 graphics and the NVIDIA GEFORCE 8800 GTS 320MB GDDR3 and then maybe someone will know straight away if its even worth the bother or not, or maybe these are not very good Spec sheets, I don't know, graphics card details is something I have never really been into at all, BUT, I do read a lot on the internet that the NVIDIA GEFORCE 8800 GTS 320MB GDDR3 can be 'superoverclocked" and from the ones that used to be sold that were super clocked that I have seen, there is no difference physically at all in the actual photos of the card, so maybe this card could be clocked to make it worthwhile ?, again, I have no idea at all about graphics  ? (I used to just buy a good new card, no money to do that these days though unfortunately).

I can Bios overclock CPU's and have done them for years, but I was always warned away from trying the same with a graphics card.

Anyways, heres those spec sheets >>>>>

Any suggestions or comments greatly read and taken in thanks, and from now on I shall try and keep the posts shorter like you said PieEater, lol, sorry about all this, I know exactly what you mean mate and then find myself typing too much details like I guess I might have done here again, darn it, lol, sorry people, me bad :(

From this review a 700W PSU should be fine for testing purposes as long as you are satisfied that it isn't faulty.

If you have been loaned a complete system it would kind of make sense to test your 6990 in this, I would suggest a quick re-install of windows to eliminate any driver issues as you'll be going from NVidia to AMD.

awww :( , that seemed like a good idea man, until I thought about the sheer size (length) of the 6990, its 12 inches long (yes a massive card), so I popped the side off my mates machine for a quick measure up and its about at the very least 1.5 to 2 inches too short for that card :(

I could maybe and I say "maybe" strip out the cage at the front of the case to see if I could get the card in, but that looks like quite a lot of work, its an old system I can remember when my mate bought it roughly, and the thing I am going by is the general release date of that Nvidia card and that was approx very early 2007, so I would Imagine the case was from about that time to or maybe even older, I thought it was a full sized Tower as it looks like one, but it must be roughly like a mid/full size, anyways, pity about that as it was a good idea what you suggested mate.

So I guess whatever needs done is going to have to be done in my PC.

I don't know if you or anyone is into the details of graphics cards etc much ? But that's why I posted up the photos I found of the onboard Graphics that I am using just now (Intel HD 4000) and the Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTS 320MB card, I was basically trying to find out if its even worth while using that graphics card permanently rather than the onboard graphics, know what I mean ? For all I know the onboard graphics might actually be better, I have no idea how to compare the specs of Graphics cards really, all I do know is the Nvidia has its own memory and the Intel obviously doesn't and the Nvidia goes away up to a much higher resolution too, whether that's enough on its own to go ahead and use the card over the Intel graphics I don't really know

My mate gave me the system to keep, so I don't need to worry about that part of things, good for at least spares I guess.

not quite sure what route to go down now with this as I still haven't really figured much out apart from the fact that the machine stopped freezing/crashing soon as I stopped using the AMD card by pulling the power cables from it, whether that means its a faulty graphics card, PSU or motherboard I still don't know, hmmmmm

Thanks again PieEater mate, and sorry I am still making my posts a bit long, just trying to say what I think, that's all, lol, hard to squeeze it all into a couple of lines, lol, sorry mate or anyone reading these posts :(

ohh, P.S, I know no matter what I do I would have to use driver sweeper etc to remove any trace of drivers for each card etc, I have always done my graphics drivers that way, the best way :) , plus this is just a fresh full format and install of windows too like you suggested PieEater, that was done I think I said earlier on the 5/6th July, anyways, just saying :)

thanks again mate and sorry for not getting back to you sooner.

That link was very helpful and it led me to a lot of other internet things about it too, so thanks man :) (I couldn't find that overclockers link when I searched, but anyhow, you did and that's all that matters :) ) The 8800 GTS seemingly is slightly better than the Integrated Intel graphics, not a lot but enough, so that defo worth a try :) .

ALSO, big update, I had a look last night at the last time I upgraded my motherboard bios and since then there has been 10 updates, YES 10 UPDATES, LOL.....

So, I took the plunge and updated the bios to the most recent and then worked into the small hours tweaking all the new added options to the bios that they have added and got my cpu overclocked and stable again same as before, was a bit of hassle, but after hours I got it all done and then made sure to save it too.

ANOTHER update, I contacted my PSU manufacturer and checked to see if just maybe its still under warranty, I have to wait until next week to see what happens with that as I might get a replacement, hope so.

In the meantime though I guess it would be a good idea with the latest Bios update installed to try the AMD 6990 again just to see if it works or not, as I think you and others have said, sometimes, just sometimes, a bios can get corrupted for some reason, so that's always a possibility, and at this stage anything is worth a try, one step at a time though so that I can figure out whats going on.

Looks like I will be dealing with the graphics card side of things first as its going to take days for the PSU manufacturers to get back to me later in the week.

Ok, really got my fingers crossed now, just plugged the AMD 6990 back in after installing my latest version of system Bios which was 10 updates old as I said in last post post.

I know or have a funny feeling I am hoping for miracles, but sometimes miracles happen as they say, I have never seen a bios update fix anything like this before, especially when I hadn't even updated the graphics driver in about one year either and it worked fine with the old bios and old graphics driver before, but as they say, sometimes things can just happen, so its worth a shot.

So this is where I am at just now, AMD 6990 plugged back in, as I say etc, its running as I expected it would and I expect it will close down/freeze etc when it wants to as it done before, if it doesnt then its a bonus :) If it does its then try the old NVidia 8800 GTS card while I wait on word back from my PSU manufacturer as I said earlier too.

I will keep youz informed, no doubt everyone is sitting waiting patiently on the results, LOL, (NOT !) LOL.

Just thought I would bore you all some more, hehehehe, lol, seriously though, keeping the post updated as it may help someone else at sometime or may even help me again if I need to refer back to it etc :)

right here we go again, I thought what I expected that it would freeze or shut down as usual etc.

BUT, this is very very strange, well to me anyway it is if it turns out something to do with this, but I cant see it as its had 2 fresh windows installs and everything (and the latest system bios update) too.

Anyway, you know how you get the built in windows re-run assessment thing so that it updates the windows performance score etc, you know what I am talking about ????..........right ok, well, I am trying to simply run that and I get the black screen, no error codes or nothing and the computer is still running and I can hear the sound coming through the speakers, so it hasn't closed down etc (just blank/black screen).

So I tried that a few times and exact same thing happened, and then I thought ok, well if this is a graphics problem I will go to extremes and run furmark which I did and it runs perfectly fine and the graphic card fan ramps right up and the temps of the graphics ramp right up too which is expected etc.

So what the heck is going on there man ???

I have no way of telling what its actually doing, know what I mean ?

Does anyone have any ideas ?

another update:

as I said, have the most recent bios and decided to go full hog and for the 3rd time in about 1 week I formatted the windows drive and done a clean windows install just to make sure everything was back to scratch etc.

so then as I wasn't doing much I connected back up the AMD 6990 card and the darn thing started to act up again with same problem :(

So while I was at it I threw in the old GeForce 8800 GTS 320mb card and that appears for now to be stable, touch wood for luck.

Thing is now, this really takes me back to square one doesn't it (or does it ?), because if your thinking same as me then I am thinking there is either a fault with the AMD 6990 or the PSU not being able to supply it enough power and I haven't tried another power supply with it as I just know that one I have spare wont even start this pc as I am overclocked etc etc etc.

so I guess now I just need to wait on the PSU manufacturer getting back to me again and hoping for the best, BUT, can we now at least rule out the motherboard at this stage, (or can we ?) does anyone know ??

this is really really starting to give me headaches now man and I am ready to throw the whole computer right through the window, you see, I don't keep well at all with my health, so anything like lifting and laying computers etc really does me right in man and I am not in any way looking for sympathy because on that note I couldn't care less, its me that like this, not you thank goodness, I don't expect any extra help either for being long term ill either, simple facts are I am though, so it does take a lot out of my body and mind having to do these things now days, but I used to do it all no problems away back from the windows 1995 day, getting too old and tired now though, but hey, that's life, anyways would still appreciate if anyone can chat please ?? thanks

Have u tried underclocking the GPU memory. Also because you are putting so much information in your thread you might want to consider making it into a series of bullet points rather than padding out with things like "I don't know what's going on, any ideas". Makes it really difficult to gain the facts. I've had this post open in a tab for a few days now.

I myself was having problems. Although this was a relatively new overclock, new build from May. I've fixed my problem, but I'll probably make my own thread about it.

Cheers mate, I haven't even overclocked the GPU at all, never have.

I know what you mean with me making long posts but I just find it really difficult to post everything I want to say in just a few lines, other than that I would need to just post loads more posts in the thread to cover what I want to say, so it just really the same thing whether it be long posts or several posts, and I know some people get tired and bored of reading, well that's until the same problem happens to them and then all of a sudden posts like mine may or may not come in very handy :)

Well, I have a new PSU on order, should have it this week sometime, its about time anyway as the one I have is probably about 8 years old or something like that, good old long lasting quality CoolerMaster parts :) , So I ordered the daddy of them all to replace it and again its a CM but its the top of range model, the V1200 Platinum.

So all I need to hope for now is that it was the PSU causing the fault as that was my very first thought on the matter, maybe this old one just doesn't have enough power left in it to power up the electricity guzzling AMD 6990 graphics card, we shall soon find out.

If that's not the problem then I will get a new graphics card, if that's not the problem it will be lastly a new motherboard obviously.

Anyways, for anyone who is even interested at all in the slightest, that's where I am at just now with this, seems to still be running fine right now with the old PSU and the grand golden oldie Nvidia 8800 GTS card in it for now, touch wood for luck, so I really strongly hope that's a sign that the motherboard isn't faulty, I hope not.

I see no mention of trying the 6990 in the other pci slot?

I did say mate, was further up the thread though, the 6990 wouldnt fit in the other case that I have, so that was the end to that idea sadly, its a pity as it would have been a good idea, but however, we are where we are now.

Thanks for your comment though mate, its much appreciated as is anyones :)

edit: see next post lude1962 mate.
