i believe they are nation wide?

How is learning with BSM? In general are there adi's good tutors?

Yes, they are nationwide.

Well my driving instructor (who was an independant) called BSM, Bull **** Method. But I think that was due to the fact that he used to work for them, but he really didn't agree with the way they taught people. That would have been many many years ago now, and as far as I know they are a large decent company to go with. :)

my private instructor didnt like bsm much either. He believed they made learning to drive a lot more complicated that it actually was. And also found they'll start teaching you manoveurs too soon. I had about 8-9 lessons before i started learning mine, the main reason for this was that he believed until you can confidently drive the car fowards, you shouldnt start to attempt it backwards.

A few friends learnt with BSM and passed quite quickley, so all round thumbs up i guess.

My other half was originally taught by BSM and *really* didn't get on with them. They insisted on doing minimum 2-hour lessons yet she still took as many lessons as I did to pass which makes it very expensive. She failed 3 tests with them- moved to the same instructor as me and passed first time.

I had some lessons privately before changing to bsm. I didn't think there was anything wrong with the private one i stopped for other reasons, however, the bsm instructor was far better.

Obviously...this is just 2 people but a private instructor would have everything to gain from claiming bsm suck :p

Infact they'd look a bit stupid saying anything else.

The instructor I used hated them, he worked for them before he started been self-employed. He used to call them ‘Bring Some Money’.

I would think a good private instructor would be cheaper? :)

They have an offer on at the moment which is decent.

5 Lessons for £75, so that's £15 an hour/lesson.

You have to call 0845 855 0175 and quote FIVE475 to get that offer though.

Friends of mine have used them and passed first time, can't really complain about that!

Heard nothing but bad things about them tbh.
AA were great for me and the missus, and my brother and a load of other friends.

Had an independant instructor first, but he was cack, and I didn't get on. Went with BSM next purely because I was passing the shop.

The BSM instructor was great. However I think it comes down to the instructor rather than the company. See if your friends can recommend someone. In my old office 5 people ended up taking lessons from the same independant because the first guy said he was good. All of them seem to enjoy their lessons.

I went through 2 Private Instructors, 1 small franchise that operates in most towns in the North West and finally ended up with BSM, my instructor was great.

Surely there are bad ones everywhere but I couldn't fault the BSM one.

:D

Well heres another way to look at it. I used to work for BSM and can confirm that there are both good and bad that work for them.

The thing with large driving schools is that all the 'less proficient' instructors can hide in them while if your an independant then its your reputation that matters so generally you need to be pretty good. That said you still get some aweful oneman bands.

Best bet is to ask a few friends and get some reccommendations then phone around, Ask them how good they are and why you should learn with them. Generally if you get on ok on the phone then usually its fine in the car.

You could get the best ADI in the world but if you hate the sound/sight of them your not going to listen and you wont learn much. Pick someone that sounds right to you and try a lesson or 2 with them and if you dont like them go someplace else.

Remember buy cheap buy twice so dont just go on price. Cheap ADI's are usually cheap for a reason.

I did 20hrs with BSM (10x 2hrs) with no car to practice in at home (2hrs a week) and passed first time with 2 minors. I'd recommend them, but whether the instructor would be of the same quality would be an unknown.

2hr lessons are definately the way forward in my opinion, as it reduces the average time you spend going to and from locations, starting up and all the rest.

i currently have a franchise through BSM, and we do have a few bad ADIs that are hiding behind the good ones, as was quoted by an examiner to one of our office staff that had a test a few weeks ago, i am am glad to say was not on that list :), and no she was not one of mine

no matter what job/company you choose you will always find some that are not really up to the job, so instructing is no different, as already said get recommendations, either for a BSM/AA instructor, or private (you will find most privates started with BSM)

Reverse psychology for me! I didn't particularly get on with my instructor, didn't despise him, just that he bored me to tears with his tales of woe on a weekly basis. I saw this as a catalyst to put a lot of effort in and pass asap so I didn't have to put up with it and give him my hard earned cash!

LOL, If it works.....

My BSM instructor was awful

Maybe a bit more detail would be helpful. In what way was he awful? Or was it just that you were not as good as you thought you should be?

Its funny how many of my pupils admit that they though learning to drive would be just a case of turning up and playing with the car for a bit then do that test thingy......

Remember sitting in the passenger seat watching somebody drive it always LOOKS easy :D
