BSOD After driver install. Help..?

Hello all, I just installed a Radeon HD5870 (reference design) in one of my systems and it booted up fine, into the operating system, temperatures were good, all seemed fine.

I then proceeded to download the appropriate ATI drivers and installed them. This system already had pre-existing ATI drivers and Nvidia drivers as the GPU's get swapped for testing purposes.

After the compulsory restart following the update, I got a BSOD relating to something 'ATI' I managed to read before it shut off, so i thought fine, i'll boot into safe mode and sort it out.

So I booted into safe mode with networking as easy as pie, worked perfectly fine, and removed ALL ATI/AMD drivers and software suites with a view to restart into regular windows mode using the windows VGA default drivers, and then set about doing a clean install of the ATI drivers, but on every restart I still get the same BSOD and can't reach the login screen.

I tried installing the drivers in safe mode, but it couldn't detect my graphics hardware because that feature calls upon a driver which is disabled in safe mode and so the instalation fails.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks :)
 
try driver sweeper uninstall remaining driver software from amd and Nvidia and try again also you could also try reseating your card and make sure the power is connected properly

Will look up that software thankyou but will it work in safe mode? The Nvidia drivers wouldnt affect it would they? That doesnt seem to make sense to me :rolleyes: and yes the power is connected properly, and everything is seated correctly :)
 
Drivers can conflict on some systems and on others work perfectly well in tandem (one AMD+one NVIDIA card).

Try with driver sweeper and see how that works. If no good, maybe a fresh install of windows is the way to go.

I have deleted all of the residual AMD drivers with driver sweeper, re-installing the AMD drivers alongside the Nvidia ones first, if that doesnt work i'll repeat the process but delete the Nvidia drivers too.
I used to swap between an 8800GTS and an HD5450 each with the appropriate drivers, had no trouble there.
 
Nope, even with all Nvidia drivers uninstalled and all AMD/ATI drivers uninstalled, I get the bluescreen on startup after driver instalation. It says 'atikmpag' dot something. or similar on the BSOD.
 
I tried using the drivers which you can get from the device manager, and the screen just artifacted and blurred/merged and then went black on the windows load up.

Is the GPU practically dead? It was originally bought faulty with an overheating problem which I remedied, but now this is happening.

I have been using the nvidia card (8800GTS) in that system without any trouble for weeks. Most of the time folding at 100% load while overclocked as well. I had also been using an HD5450 prior to that in that system.

I will give the HD5870 a bake... See if it helps things... It shouldn't make anything worse at least.

Ok, having put it in le oven for a short spell just to see if any difference is made, When i turn on the computer it gets past the 'windows loading' screen now, and the cursor appears, it then turns into the loading wheel, the 'welcome' startup chime sounds, and then it locks up and bluescreens with the same error as before.

I also noticed that the GPU idles at 60°C with the fan spinning quite fast despite the fact that everything is seated correctly and with good thermal paste has been used. Can anyone link these two things and help me with a diagnosis?

Next thing I do is re-install the operating system, and if that doesn't work, try the card in another PC if I can. Though at this point i'm not hopeful, and it will probably go back from whence it came.
 
try reinstalling OS on a spare drive if you have one so you dont loose all your data see if it does work but by the sounds of it the card is on its way out especially running at 60 degrees idle
 
can close this thread now if you wish, I have a newer one with the same/very similar subject.
