BSOD - BF2 won't run, easy solution or upgrade?

Evening

Been having a few problems seemingly to do with graphics. I installed the new catalyst drivers last week and I've been having problems ever since - stuttering, text coming up as black squares, crashing to desktop and, in BF2, if i try to zoom a weapon I just get a black screen & die.

So, I downloaded new drivers, removed the old ones, installed the new ones. Tried again, same problem, except this time I got the BSOD. I even had problems scrolling down pages in opera, which has never happened before.

So, my PC is getting on a bit (especially the socket 754 processor), is it worth sorting it out (and how?) or should I get a new processor/mobo etc - and any cheapo options?

Thanks for any help, I need to play my favourite game!

do a memtest on your ram, check it for errors. also go into control panel => admin tools => event viewer, and click on "application" just above security.
you should see a list of information and errors etc. check if there are any errors which occur just before BF2 goes haywire. maybe something else is triggering it. hopefully someone else will be able to post some more help up for ya.

Revert to the old Cats. If the problem persists then consider hardware.

Your system beats my old Socket A which is still fine for BF2, so i would not be rushing to upgrade - However it sounds like you are happy to have this excuse :)

So in summary, send me your old and obviously broken hardware and be very happy with your new Core 2 Duo!

Right, I ran memtest for an hour or so and it found no errors after 190%, so that seems to be okay.

Then tried the event viewer option and there seems to be a common error just before my pc restarts. This is the info:

"Event Type: Warning
Event Source: Userenv
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1517
Date: 23/01/2007
Time: 21:58:08
User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Computer: NORMAN
Description:
Windows saved user NORMAN\Ben registry while an application or service was still using the registry during log off. The memory used by the user's registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is no longer in use.

This is often caused by services running as a user account, try configuring the services to run in either the LocalService or NetworkService account.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp."

Bizarrely, I tried this a few minutes ago and the link was to something called 'mysql' which purports to be the 'world's most popular online database'!

Any ideas anyone? I'm stumped!

Thanks

I forgot to suggest just rolling back to a restore point - earliest you have when you last recall BF2 working.

Try the old Cats after running the Cat uninstaller on the website if that doesn't work.

I found BF2 crapped out on my 9800 SE " Pro in the most recent two Cats.

*Just looking at your log - are you running as an administrator, or as a limited user when you install the Cats (and BF2 patches).

Well it just happened again - playing BF2 happily, suddenly it starts to slow down, then jaggies everywhere, then it freezes, then bsod.

Interesting what you say about administrator, the windows error log file pointed me to a user "bennor~1~000" folder rather than the "Ben" user file which is odd.

I'll try a restore point now, then official ati drivers next.

Thanks

HIJACK! lol

What patch is everyone using on BF2? I used 1.4 but there was almost no servers, and the I used 1.3 but it still had many less servers than I remember before... is everyone on 1.41 now? People were avoiding 1.4 'cos of EA "spyware" weren't they?

Well, believe it or not, I removed my video drivers, installed the latest official ones from ati and.... it works. Problem appears to be with the omega drivers.

Thanks for all the help.

BF1 .41 patch works fine here. Though I am on old Soft Modded Cats. My 9800 SE @ Pro is finickity with the recent ones.

Anyhoo - the take home troubleshooting message today is;

Try the default drivers, then blame the hardware.

Wise words yoda-san.

I'll even try the BF2 patch tonight, see if it was the drivers causing those problems too....
