Evening all,

I have just installed new motherboard and ram thinking this would cure a BSOD problem, no joy. I had also brought a new graphics card and PSU for the old motherboard thinking it was them. Current system that is freezing is:

Gigabyte 78LMT-S2P
Athlon II X4 630
Corsair value DDR3 1333
Sapphire HD 5670 512MB

Software, Windows 7 Ent, Comodo, CC Cleaner, windows mail, open office, CPUID, firefox. That's it until I can stop it from freezing

Now I am getting random freezes when using firefox, windows mail etc, but I can play GTA IV for hours with no problems. BlueScreenView gives the same driver every time as the cause (atikmpag.sys) with the following in the in the stack:

atikmpag.sys+64ba
dxgkrnl.sys+8d07b
dxgmms1.sys+692c
ntoskrnl.exe+14188d90
watchdog.sys+107e

I have Google this lots and I have done the following to try and resolve the issue:

Clean install of windows
Defragged
lots of drivers updates,
Removing drivers, using CCC and re-installing drivers
Latest Mobo Bios
Temps are all good

No amount of uninstalling / reinstalling fixes the freezes, can anyone see a problem with the hardware or software or combo? I am sure that I have setup bios correctly.

Mega brownie points on offer to anyone who can pinpoint this bug.

Many thanks

Cliff

You'll also need to know the STOP code to find out what sort of BSOD it is. If you can't see it when the blue screen is showing, but you can restart, look in the Windows System Event Log (start/run eventvwr), there should be a STOP code and four parameter. Post them here and we'll see what we can find out.

Also, you didn't mention whether you had run a full memory test? I use the memtest program from the System Rescue CD (sysresccd.org) - this is a free bootable linux CD.

Finally, the ati... in the module you mention suggests graphics, can you run in safe mode OK?

Does the system freeze for a period of time then become usable again? Or once it freezes do you have to switch off the power and reboot?

I don't have an amd/ati gfx card, but from what I understand I believe you don't need to have the Catalyst Control Centre installed - can you uninstall the control centre but leave the drivers installed and see if the problem persists (from a quick google, atikmpag.sys is part of the control centre I think).

Regarding when a bsod happens, you can change a setting in Windows so that a bsod will not result in an instant reboot if you prefer this (instead you will see the bsod):

right-click 'computer' and select properties
click 'advanced system properties'
Advanced tab
under the Startup and Recovery section at the bottom click 'Settings'
remove the tick from Automatically Restart

Good Evening All,

Many thanks for getting back to me, Froze four times this evening already!

Information requested below,

Many thanks

CLiff

Yes sorry forgot to say I did a memory test only got through four passes before I needed to stop, that took three hours. No errors.

No problems in safe mode at all.

Once it freezes it resets its self after about 10 seconds

I have removed the control center and only installed the driver using the ATI install manager. I will try and remove all the ATI software and only instal the driver but not using the ati install manager to see if this helps.

Have you carried over the HDD from your old rig as this could be the problem? Might be worth testing the drive as you have changed everything else it would seem.

The BSOD error coes you posted suggest the graphics card. I suggest you try another one, or perhaps if you have different graphics on the motherboard, try with that instead for a time to see if the problem goes away.

Hi,

The HD5760 is a new card as I suspected it might have been my old overclocked HD4670 and replaced it.

I have three HDDs after replacing the mobo and ram I was experiencing issues so I put a clean instal on one of the HDDs.

The only things I have not changed are the monitor, keyboard, mouse and case. I don't think these items would cause any issues.

Thanks

Cliff

Good Evening,

Still having issues, uninstalling the ATI display driver stops the issues.

Any ideas what I can do?

I want to start thinking about overclocking my new rig, right now I want to throw it out the window!

Help, please Help

Many thanks

Cliff

chipset drivers? Cooling in the case meaning the gfx card is overheating? Another driver not up to date and causing problems? Nail down waht's causing it and all should be rosy...

good evening,

Thanks for the reply's,

The HD5670 is on a Accelero S1 Rev 2, and is not yet overclocked. Temps are always low, the highest I've seen was 58 but that was with just the PSU fan running.

I will give some old drivers a go in the morning.

Thanks

Clive

just a couple of observations, did you fit the cooler? there's a small chance you've borked the card in that case so can you try it in a mates pc?
You may just have a bad installation of windows or a bad disc....if all else fails try downloading a copy (it's legit to do so) and re-installing

Good Evening, thanks for the response.

Borked the card, not sure what that means but I believe the card is good as I can play GTV IV for two hours with no issues. As soon as I finish the game and start using mail or Firefox then it freezes. The PC froze three times today, started up windows and it froze when opening Firefox, during the animation of the window opening.

I have windows 7 enterprise do you know where I can get a download, also do you know if i can change from 32 bit to 64 bit with the same key?

Thanks

Cliff

Well I have now got 64 bit windows and the problem was still there, so not windows.

I have found a way to make it stable, underclock the graphics card by around 10%. Any Ideas what the problem could be?

Some good news, I have overclocked my Athlon 630 from 2.8 to 3.5, only needed a little extra on the voltage to make it 100% stable.

Thanks
