BSOD - Unmounted Volume / No Volume

Hi guys,

An XP machine I use fairly infrequently has just chucked up the above on startup... is there anything I can do? I'd like to try and recover the partition

I had something similar recently with a lost partition on a flash drive. I'm not so worried about getting windows to boot again but I'd quick like to get a few bits of data back.

Get in to Repair Console and try the "fixboot" command along with chkdsk /r

Thanks mate! I'll try that later on. Thing is, I tried doing a few things from a live cd and the command prompt didn't recognise the drive as being formatted

Will the repair console see things differently? Seeing as though its only the data I need off of the drive and not the bootable operating system I was considering something like easeus? Got a feeling I'm going to need to recover the partition...

if its particularly old it could be the HDD cable - the old 40 pin ones could throw up this error from time to time
