Hey all,

I recently got a call from BT offering a free boost to option 3 (BT Total Broadband) and so we thought we'd go for it.

I got my "Home hub" and co yesterday and I've installed it all etc.

However, I'm getting speeds of around 1MB connection speed when I previously got 2MB.

I spoke to someone at BT about it and they said it can take up to 10 days for the speed to fully optimize. Is this correct? Has anyone else gone for BT option 3 and had the same experience?

Thanks,

Marky

Try using speedtester.bt.com to get an idea of what is going on.

If you post the results here we can help you interpret them.

It does take a few days for the connection speed to settle down but it can also get stuck which we'll be able to see from the results once you post them.

BT 8MB is 'IPStream Max', they will enable your line for this service and it will usually take around 10 working days for the equipment at your exchange to detirmine the best stable speed your line can handle based on signal strength and connection quality. The speed may fluctuate a bit during those 10 days and you may lose connection. They refer to this period as a stabilisation period and the rate it decides as the MSR or Maximum Stable Rate.

It is also entirely possible that you may end up with a slower speed than you previously had due to you being plugged into different equipment on the line, or changes in the information BT has about the line to your house since you originally registered.

This afternoon I've checked my speed and it now says I'm getting just under 2MB speed.

Here are the results:

The speed test has completed on test server test.speedtester.bt.com for user [PHONENUMBER] and you have downloaded a 1.7Mb file at a speed of

1791 kilo bits per second (Kbps), your service bandwidth will have been quoted to you in kilo bits per second.

Your IP address is [IPADDRESS], your browser is reported as being Microsoft Internet Explorer 7.0 and is running on Windows XP.

BT would regard the speed ranges shown below as normal service:

For 250kbps End Users speeds between 50 - 250kbps.
For 500kbps End Users speeds between 100 - 500kbps.
For 1000kbps End Users speeds between 200 - 1000kbps.
For 2000kbps End Users speeds between 400 - 2000kbps.

Hope you can spread some light on this :)
Hopefully it will just continue to increase in speed or at least get a little faster over the next 10 days.
I'll definatly keep you posted however :)

If it doesn't say anything about an IP profile, it sounds like you're still on fixed rate 2Mbps. What does your modem say it's connected at?

How do I find that out?

Not getting 8000kbps isn't an indication in itself, but the fact that your upstream is still at 288kbps and downstream is the value for home2000 gives the game away.

Did yours get activated on the delivery date or did you have to wait?

Your ISP should've given an estimate - expect it to be any time up to 7-10 days.

Ah okay thanks buddy :) I'll give it a week or so :)
