I'm rather puzzled as when I originally upgraded to AOL broadband from AOL dial-up back in 2003, I don't remember having to pay BT's £47 activation fee so I assume that AOL didn't charge me and 'absorbed' the cost as I had entered into a 12 month contract?

If the above theory is wrong, would I be right in thinking that the £47 activation fee is only a recent charge?

p.s. I know that you don't get charged an activation fee if you migrate and provide your new provider with a MAC code.

Hi, I paid an activation charge waaaay back in 2001 when i first got ADSL with ClaraNET, that included the first months ADSL the total was £226.24

512 ADSL @ 49.99 per month... ouch

Mmm... you were charged the activation fee and I wasn't

I know that I didn't pay it as I keep all my bank statements and I checked.

I was given a free BT Voyager modem and had to enter into a 12 month contract but there was no mention of a charge!

There's a mate in work who wants to upgrade from dial-up to Max DSL with BT using the home hub set-up and I am not sure if he will get charged an activation fee, he says no but I'm not so sure.

p.s. I'm no longer with AOL as I migrated out around 6 months ago :)

In 2003 it was £54 IIRC. It's always existed, just in varying amounts.
Thanks tolien.

I can only assume that AOL chose not to charge me and in any case it's not important.

It seems strange that the cost was higher than it is now!
