At the moment i seem to have got myself into a terrible position with my TV/Broadband costs.

I'm paying Virgin £44 a month for 120mb internet plus the line rental. Then i'm paying Sky £30 a month for the most basic of basic packages for 2 boxes.

Thats not far off £80 a month for internet i don't really need and tv thats barely any better than freeview!

As such i've been looking at alternatives.

Option 1

Cancel Sky and buy 2 freesat boxes. Only downside here is that whilst i'll be saving £30 a month i'm gonna be paying out around £400 upfront for 2 Humax boxes. This seems silly as it'll take over a year to recover the costs whilst having less channels.

Option 2

Take out a BT Vision subscription. I've priced this up at £45 a month including line rental and BT Infinity. Price wise this seems like the best option, however i'd have to get 2 new sockets installed so again the upfront cost would be quite high (including the £100 second box charge). Advantage is the £200 quidco cashback available.

Option 3

Try and look at Sky broadband. They do normal broadband for £7.50 a month or £20 for Fibre. This isn't much cheaper than the Virgin internet after line rental (Virgin is a lot faster and i know for sure that its reliable). Obviously theres the hope that they'll do me a cheaper package. The other option is the cancel and try and get the wife to sign up. This would get us a cheaper package and quidco cashback but downsides are it might not work!

Does anyone have the current BT vision box? My mother in law has an old version and it's terrible and not something i'd really want to be honest. The EPG is slow and laggy and it just doesnt seem very user friendly. Upsides would be the cost and the fact i'd have BT Sport.

My wife couldn't get on with the Virgin Tivo box so don't really want to go back to them for TV.

Option 4, phone Virgin retentions and say you're leaving because Sky is cheaper and the'll jump through hoops to offer you a deal to keep you.

I pay £26 a month for 120mb with them and I didn't even try that hard :)

Or do the same with Sky... say Virgin have offered you an awesome TV deal etc as you already have them for Internet/phone and see what they offer.

Is that with line rental? That's pretty much what I'm on and they say they can't budge on the price whenever I've rang them.

Or just persuade the missus to get on with the Tivo. It's only £35 a month + phone line for the big kahuna package atm, goes up to the normal £45+phone after that.

Don't understand why your misses didn't like the tivo it's easy as hell to use and Is a good box.. I'd phone virgin ull get a good deal if you say your leaving

Compared to the latest Sky HD boxes and EPG updates the Virgin UI is hideously bad and the box is slow and buggy.

Agreed, we always found that what should take 1 buttom in Sky took about 5 in Virgin. It just isn't as friendly. Perhaps it changed as i got the Tivo boxes when they first came out around 3 years ago (if not longer)

Option 5 could be good though. Through TCB i can get £105 cashback for taking out Sky Fibre with 6 months for free (£20 a month thereafter). For minimal hassle that could be an option (or a bargaining tool if i ring to cancel)
